Alternator needs replacing on a VW Polo W reg, (UK)this is what RAC man said?
My car has been stopping on me at different times thought it could just be the battery this has been happening on & off now for a long time, but called rac man yesterday he did some checks on battery which was flat & he charged up for 20mins or & was tested ok & he reckons it will be necessary to renew the alternator & recharge the battery & advised me not to drive again only to a garage to get alternator!!!
Does anyone know how much a new alternator would cost?
also i'm consdering putting the car in for its yearly service should i just get the alternator/bat chacked again then by someone else!

May be worth checking with someone else, but if the RAC guy charged the battery and the car started then sounds to me like the alternator isn't charging the battery and needs replacing. Likely cost is £100 but I doubt it will be much more than £150 - £200. I would advise ringing around for quotes from local garages, just tell them what car it is etc and they should be able to give you an estimate.

No. Volkswagen are strong, reliable cars and last a lifetime. The Polo is a better contender over the Astra and has been around since the Seventies. Your 1998 model will probably outlast you if you treat it right and keep it serviced when needed. These cars can easily top 1 million miles on the clock without major problems. Stick with what you've got. It's a great little car.

you could get it checked by someone else but if the RAC said it was the alternator then it more than likely is, it could cost anywhere from £100 upwards + labour, they might have to replace the belt as well.
