Should I not use dex-cool antifreeze when I get my radiator flushed in a 2002 pontiac grand am?

I have the 2.2 ecotec engine in my grand am, and have noticed that the v6 had alot of problems with the dex-cool antifreeze, and there was a lawsuit. The 2.2 wasn't listed. 2 months ago my low coolant light came on as I was merging on the freeway to go to my brothers 75 miles away, I merged right off and went to a gas station and they checked things out and just topped it off and said everything looked fine, and it was ok to keep going since the car was running fine and not hot. It ran fine all the way there and my bro checked it when I got there, it was fine not hot at all and no leaks. Got home didn't run hot, never has. I just want to get it flushed since we are getting into the 90 degree weather. the gas station put in all weather antifreeze, and it was the same color as what was in there. Not red like the dex-cool is. The car only has 57,000 miles on it, I have had it for about 5 yrs. not since brand new, I do change the oil every 3000 miles, but haven't flushed the radiator yet. Its been a great car.

I took my wife's 5 year old Cad to the dealer and asked the same question essentially. They said it didn't matter that it was 5 years old. It has only 44k miles on it and they say leave in the factory fill until it has 100k. That really makes little sense to me since it is not like oil but they own it for another 56k miles now.

Pontiac is indeed a GM brand and as such has used Dexcool since 1996 or so. However, lots of people switch to a different OAT or HOAT coolant after the warranty period; your V6 will suffer intake manifold gasket failure sooner or later if Dexcool is used the whole time. The 4 cylinders and V8s do not run coolant through the intake manifold gaskets but the V6s do.

Dex-cool has been reformulated long since and should be fine. Actually, most of the coolant on the market now is essentially the same thing, anything that says "long life" or "low toxicity" uses a similar formula.

The problems with the v6 engines was the intake gasket would leak the dexcool into the engine. Flush it and replace it with dexcool.
