Why am I smelling things that do not actually exist?

For the past month or two just out of nowhere I will smell a really strong bleach odor. Sometimes at night it is cigarette smoke it is strong and distinct. No one in my house smokes and lots of times I am alone when the smoke smell starts. Today I began smelling paint it has came and went for the last 12 hours but it is strong and my husband cannot smell it. When the smell is bleach it is super strong some times to the point it burns my nose and makes me physically ill. No one else can ever smell these odors and it happens in places other than just my home. There have been days that I have not been able to ride in my truck because I get in and the bleach smell is so strong I can't take it. This is starting to hinder my life, like I am up right now do to the paint smell. Please help! What could this be?

Update:

no never anything pleasant. It is always a bad smell.

well im not sure if u beleive in these things but i've heard that when u smell things like that, they are from your surroundings , and that there were things like that there in the past. maybe you are experiencing things from ghosts that used to live where you live.

or maybe youre pregnant. pregnancy can make you smell ectremely distinct smells.

Sometimes smells give me a familliar sense that I have nearly forgotten about. Like I could smell something and suddenly have a little flashback to where I had that smell. It's usually a place I used to be often and for a quick second or two I feel like I was there once again. Its really cool

sometimes a place will remind me of a smell. A smell is a sense, just like the other ones and perhaps certain things remind you of certain smells. I guess you could call that a hallucination. The more aware of that you are, it could perhaps get worse or better, realizing that it is all in your head and not really there.

Like why would the smell of bleach be in your car? It seems to be the unpleasant smells that you are aware of, any nice smells that others don't notice?

I read a book about something like this a long time ago. The guy kept hearing things that weren't there and smelling things that weren't there. It was a brain tumor that was causing it. This has happened all of a sudden and it persists. Get to the doctor ASAP

It's a type of hallucination, instead of auditory or tactile, it involves the sense of smell. I'm afraid you have schizophrenia. Go see your doctor about starting a course of treatment on Haldol, which is a horrible, depressing and dangerous drug.
