Serious question about Fred Phelps?

Everyone knows what a tool Fred Phelps is and what a bunch of raving lunatics his Westboro Baptist Church are. But did you know that he used to be an activist lawyer? Like a way-left leaning liberal activist lawyer?

So here's my question, and I assure you I'm quite serious. Do you think it's possible that Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church are really liberals in disguise as fundies? Consider all they've done to drive the fence-sitters over to the side of homosexual liberties. Perhaps their protests are masked to look like they are against gays (or more specifically, that God is), when in reality they're only trying to draw more attention to the senseless war in Afghanistan/Iraq while also driving homosexuality sentiment up? Because if that's what they're about, it's a brilliant strategy. At the cost of credibility and public rebuke, of course.

So do you think that's what they're about, or do you think they are sincere, in which case they definitely take the FUN out of damentalism.

Update:

KD: I served in the Army from 1990 to 1998, and in that capacity served in Saudi Arabia/Kuwait during the first Gulf War. You?

Even the anti- theists have asked him and he won't tell. LandoverBaptist caved and fessed up.

That's certainly a novel hypothesis, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan ARE immoral. But I'm not sure that even the most dedicated ideologues could maintain such an unpopular facade for so long without someone tipping their hand. And diverting blame for the wars toward individual soldiers rather than toward the policy makers who perpetuate them is another ethical compromise. It doesn't seem to have an actual effect on public opinion about U.S. foreign policy.

Well, I kinda thought they were serious. It also seems odd to me that he'd still vote Democrat (I assume. I'm not invested enough to check, just giving some food for thought). Still, kudos on an interesting question. Here's one for you: given that so many people who are vocally hating on gays turn out to be gay, are gays perhaps their own worst enemies ? Also, would you say that 'homophobia' is actually a real phobia ? If so, shouldn't we have sympathy for them the way we have sympathy for arachnophobes, hydrophobes and so on ? It seems that homophobe has become an insult rather than an acknowledgement of a genuine psychiatric condition. And here's some humor(at least I think it's funny): "I'm not a hatemonger: I'm 'tolerance challenged' '"and " 'Redneck' is an ethnic slur' ".

It's not that strange, he's an extreme example but most of the old neo-cons were ex-hippies and so many politicians make their name defending civil liberties and when in office do their best to abolish them.

No. I think it is more likely that they do such thing in order to get money from all the lawsuits they win. There's a reason a lot of them are lawyers.

Just because some one has been a shark... excuse me, lawyer... You see it's about the food chain, not ethics or morals.
