Jehovah's Witness (or Christians in general) - why do you follow the bible?

Ok, so everywhere I have ever lived, there has been a Jehovah's Witness that comes by every couple of weeks. Honestly, I admire them - I admire anyone with that kind of dedication to anything. However, I have always been freakishly interested in other religions and cultures, and it drives me nuts when I can't find the answer to a question. This is the conversation I have had with every Jehovah's Witness I have ever met:

Me: So why do you follow the bible?

JW: Because it's God's word.

Me: But how do you know it's God's word?

JW: It says so right here *insert whatever passage they want to read*

Me: So you follow the Bible because the Bible says so?

And then they get all flustered and don't know what to say. Sometimes they're very, very good at changing the subject, sometimes they give me a magazine and leave... but no one has ever actually given me an answer.

So, anyone here have an answer?

Update:

Thanks for the answers, and thanks for not bashing someone who is honestly just trying to find an answer... but none of these are really what I'm looking for.

Why is it "the right thing to do"?

What evidence, other than the Bible itself, attests to the fact that it's God's word?

I fully believe that Jesus existed, because that is a proven historical fact... but the Bible was written 200 years later by the descendants of the people that knew him - I've seen stories get messed up in an hour, let alone centuries.

And Hand Banana... The world would be a better place if people like you tried to understand the people around them instead of making up "jokes"

Update 2:

Not all prophesies have been fulfilled, and Christianity is not the only one with prophesies.

Unfortunately, there are just as many people blindly following Christianity as there are people blindly following its' haters - and frankly, neither view makes sense.

Oh, and I am careful with JW, as with anyone else who thinks they should convert anyone in sight... but they deserve a chance to explain themselves just like everyone else.

I follow the Bible for the same reason I follow a map, read the manufacturers instructions or use GPS... the principles contained in the Bible have helped me determine the best path and choices to make, from diet and exercise to the best way to avoid stress in my life. I was actually able to lower my blood sugar by following a "pre-flood" vegetarian diet.

That it is inspired by the one who created us is a bonus.

That's why I referred to reading the manufacturers suggested "Rules of Operation." Jehovah created us so, naturally, he'd know better than anyone what we need to run at optimum. What's the phrase most people in the world use... "When in doubt, read the directions"? Well, it's that simple.

Nothing mystical or exceedingly spiritual about it, it simply provides instructions for the best way of living.

The Bible proves itself true by the very accuracy of the scriptures and the in detail prophecies being fulfilled which could only happen though divine knowledge of the future given to men by God, so this gives it the creditability that it can back up its own claims knowing that The Bible is accurate with earthly things we can comprehend proves it is accurate about heavenly things with we can not comprehend.

Many skeptics fail to read The Bible and see what it says for itself, they'd rather jump on a bandwagon with what other people say and would rather read resources supporting what they believe with no background knowledge for themselves.

They choose to pick up on bits of things that may not seem possible (such as the worldwide flood) but God is all powerful and they fail to understand that God can do anything, we do not need to be able to comprehend it. They fail to mention most history and science backs up and proves The Bible is true (such as carbon dating proving that the earth isn't millions or billions of years old). That's 100% evidence compared to there theories about what could of happened that they make up.

Also, I'd be careful with JW's. Their Bible has been changed to suit their beliefs and make error on some important doctrines. However, I like that you keep on looking for answers and I'm sure you'll find your answers. You remind me of me last year :)

EDIT: Adding more for your additional questions.

The Bible was written less than 200 years after the death of Christ, closer to within 70 years after the death or Jesus in which people (John, Luke, Matthew Mark, Paul, etc) were still alive who had been disiples and with Jesus and seen Him at work.

Something you must understand about The Bible is it is written by God through the hand of men, scripture claims this yes and that is where we go back to seeing other things in scripture is accurate that we can see that these are accurate and therefore the whole Bible is accurate. Also for your more evidence there is alot so I found you a website with a bundle on in sources.

Also the whole of creation shouts there is a God. Look around you, the evidence is right there. It's nonsense how people can harden there hearts so much to say that a explosion created a world and life with the ability to reproduce and the natural plants and foods to sustain life. Whats the chances and wheres the proof again?

Yahoo solutions is a interest, and is for factors, it is not an informational communicate board, neither is it an informational communicate board on particular matters so do not anticipate anybody is knowledgeable on the subject count number of "all" religions. in all probability you may desire to communicate with a professor of theology at between the colleges to get your solutions. i'm a senior citizen and as i became into taught as a newborn, the only church that believes interior the Trinity is the Catholic church. Christian/protestant church homes who fell remote from the Catholic church do not have confidence interior the Trinity. basically some years in the past I heard there have been additionally Trinitarians who believed interior the Trinity yet i understand not something approximately them. So why would you be asking with regard to the Trinity of JW's or christians who understand not something approximately it, or maybe atheists who have not got any faith???? so yours is a extraordinary question.

  • You: So why do you follow the bible?

    Me: Because it's God's word.

You: But how do you know it's God's word?

Me: Because I have proved to myself that it must be from a higher source or power. I've done this by examining the contents, especially the prophecies that were written sometimes hundreds of years in advance ... & then came true in accurate detail.

Also, when a person chooses to follow the advice in the Bible, he/she always benefits & when a person goes against the advice, it's detrimental for them.

There are things in the Bible that could not have come from a mere human's mind. True, men did write down the words but they were inspired by God to write His words for our guidance. An open-minded examination into this fascinating book will show you these things.

Of all the supposed Holy Books that exis tin the world, the Bible is the only one that dares to deal in prophecy. Also, no prophecy has ever not come true No other Holy book dares to even try.

Although not a science book, when it touches on matters of science, it is always right. E.g Shape of planet Isa 40: 22

Animal life--Lev 11: 6--No one knew how rabbits chewed their cud until 18th century. The reason being the unusual way that it does it.

    The Bible is always accurate.

Because the Holy Bible is God's word, and all available evidence attests to that fact.

Yes exactly, it's Christian logic. The bible predicted something and the bible says it got the prediction right, proof it must be real.

    More Christian logic: 1 God + 1 Jesus + 1 Holy Ghost= Monotheism or 1 God.

I thought YOU were joking or a poe. It's hard to tell the trolls/poes from the real questions.

I follow the Bible because history shows that nearly two thousand years ago, a man who claimed to be God, was killed and brought himself back to life. The Bible is the testament of those who witnessed this, and a few words thrown in by that same God/man Himself, just for good measure! Thanks for asking friend.
