Is it possible my refrigerator needs more freon?

My side-by-side refrigerator appears to be running but the freezer doesn't freeze -- I am using it like a refrigerator -- and the refrigerator side is more like a cooler. Any advice? Do I need to replace this appliance or is there something I can do short of that?

Update:

I don't know the terminology so please give me more details. How do I check the condenser fan? What is "defrost stat?" Please assume I know nothing about refrigerators because that is pretty much true!

One simple thing to check is that the condenser(radiator looking thing) is dust free. Pull out the frig , being carefull not to harm floor (the wheels are adjustable). Remove the back cardboard like panel. Unplug the frig. with a narrow snout attachment vacuum out any dust from the condenser so the gaps are clean. Often this has fixed many a frig.

If there is no ice build up in the freezer section check to see that the condensor fan is working.Usually a refrigerators freon doesn't need a recharge as "maintenance" .Your symptom

could be low freon but if it is it's usually from a leak(usually from the evaporator),This is an expensive repair if out of waranty.

    no to the freon.

if there is ice on the back wall (or frost) of the freezer, the defrost stat is bad.

simply, a defrost stat is attached to the evaporator coil in the freezer. it's hidden by a panel, you have to dissasemble to see it. IF, and I say IF there is ice/frost on the inside of the "frostless) freezer, then this is most likely the problem. it's a weak link, and it allows the heat coil to defrost the evaporator at timed intervals. if it's bad, the heat coil gets no power, and you get no defrost, which "ices up" the coil.
