I want a Ferret... Badly.?
However, my mother is completely against me getting a Ferret being that I'm leaving to the Marines soon.
My dad agreed to care for it while I was away.
I have 4 dogs.
A 2 yr. old Labrador Retriever/Pit Bull mix.
An 8 yr. old Yorkie.
A 1 yr. old Husky.
And a 3 month old Lab/Pit/Husky pup. (I own the parents of this sucker).
I'm trying to find a way to convince my mother into letting me get a Ferret.
I want the pro's list of these cute, irresistible rodents.
My mother focuses only on the cons....

Please and thank you!!

Ferrets are not rodents
Far from it....
They are mustelids - related to skunks and weasels
I know this isnt what you want to hear, but i dont think you should get a ferret right now.
They are NOT cheap or easy pets to keep, and are more similar to keeping a dog than they are to something like a hamster.
They need annual shots from the vet, as well as desexing.
They need a lot of exercise, training and play time too, a good specialised diet, and they can live for over 7 years
They are a huge, long term committment and a lot of time needs to be put into researching them and their care properly. Since you think they are rodents i can only assume you havent done much research...
Its not really fair to get one for a while then pawn it off on your parents while they are looking after the dogs too - especially with a large breed puppy

Here's an idea, when you have your own household you can have anything you want!
As a matter of fact why don't you mention your affinity with "cute, irresistible rodents" to your drill instructor? That should make a really good impression! If you're leaving for boot camp soon maybe you should concentrate on making it through. I will guarantee you that the minute you arrive you won't be thinking about "cute ferrets"!
Just focus on the animals you already have. Your family is not responsible for maintaining your petting zoo while you're gone!

Ferrets aren't rodents.
Anyway, why can't you wait until you get back from the marines? I think if you're old enough to enlist, you're more than old enough to quit complaining about how unfair mommy is. Ferrets take a lot of time, they need a lot of attention--you don't have these things at this point in your life. I swear to you that ferrets will not be extinct before you finish basic training.

You do realize ferrets are not rodents: they are Mustelids. Also, they can live upward of ten years, and need a devoted caretaker willing to spend at least 2 hours with them every day.

I don't think a ferret is for you. You'll be paying around $300 or up for the ferret, cage, upkeep, food and vet bills. And from the sounds of it you can't even afford to spay/neuter your dogs so I don't think you can afford the ferrets.
