The spiritual soul comes from a marginal place,(Bramajyoti) between the spiritual world (Svarupa shakti) and material world (Maya shakti). By its desired to lord instead to serve, it fell to the material world. Mos jivas (spiritual souls) goes to the spiritual world instead, to serve the supreme Lord.
Qualitatively the jiva is similar to God, but in quantity, it is very small, thus capable to choose wrong. God gives freedom - you choose to come to Me and love me or go down an d try to be happy by exploring the material energy.
The Lord is unhappy when the jiva falls down and He endeavour to help the jiva cross the ocean of ilusion (material world) and reach Him.

Spirit is one of the words that has so many different definitions that it needs defining when it is used. Do you mean something scientific like life force, or are you talking something spirtual like a soul?
