it's weirder than you think.
I lived there for 6 months. First, it's very cold. They think 75 degrees farenheit is HOT!!!
Free parking is a foreign concept. You go to a grocery store and you have to PAY to park! Unless you can be in and out in 30 minutes. Like at Sainsbury's. But are they nuts? Shouldn't they make it an hour?
To them, it's more important that you vacate your parking space than it is to stick around and BUY MORE STUFF!!!
I needed some shoelaces once and I'm like in this shoe store in the mall and asked the clerk for some 20 inch shoelaces. She comes back with 20 cm shoelaces. So I said "No, I said inches, not centimeters" and she goes," it's the same thing."
Huh??? Since when??? Is she NUTS???
If you're on the freeway (they call them motorways) if you're doing 75, and a cop drives up behind you and flashes his lights, he doesn't want you to slow down.
He wants you to SPEED THE FK UP! You should be driving at 90 MPH if you want to keep up with traffic! I'm dead serious!
But if you're not on the motorways, and you miss a turn...good luck pulling over and making a u-turn. The roads are so narrow, there's NO SHOULDER. Plus, they're used to that so they can drive them incredibly fast and they're always up your ((! I once missed my turn and I drove 10 miles before I found some place to just PULL OVER!!! hand to god!
In Wales, there are some roads, with rock walls on each side, that are SO NARROW, if you encounter a car coming the other way, you're done. ONE of you has to put their car in reverse and back up until you can find a driveway to turn around in.
Coffee is 25 dollars a pound. Thank GOD I brought about 8 pounds of coffee with me when I left America. That lasted me the entire 6 months...just barely.
If you go to a store, suppose you want some sugar. You'll see a bag of sugar, 500 grams, for say, 1 pound, 40 pence. Next to it, you'll see a 1000 gram bag for...wait for it...3 pounds! You have to pay a higher unit price for the LARGER amount! Exactly the opposite of what we do.
So who would buy the larger amount? They would buy the smaller amount...of whatever it was...and it would be fresher than buying twice as much anyway.
We have dollar stores here but they have POUND stores. Since a pound is about two dollars, everything is by POLICY more expensive.
They have at least 8 standard sizes for selling MILK!! We have a gallon, a half gallon, a quart and a pint. But they have this whole different picture. And, their milk doesn't seem to need to be refrigerated!
On the whole though, the food doesn't have as much crap put into it like american food. I mean preservatives and stuff.
By the way, if you have heartburn and you use maalox or mylanta, you'd better buy that over here and take it with you. Cause you ain't gonna get any of it over there.
Their concept of washing machines is rather unique too. The washing machine somehow turns into a dryer. Except, how can you dry clothing if the dryer is not VENTED? HELLOOOOO!!! So your clothes take 9 hours to dry, not 30 minutes.
When you live in the UK and you buy stuff on ebay, be prepared to pick it up yourself. Because NO one there likes to ship stuff. Make sure you buy something that's nearby.
the roads are INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT to navigate because they are not big believers in STREET SIGNS! Plus, a street could have one name and then 4 miles later, it's a different name. And 4 miles after that, etc. This could go on for 50 miles.
Here, we sell gasoline by the gallon. And the price goes up by a penny a gallon or something like that. But there, the fuel is sold PER LITER. Which is about one-fourth of a gallon. So when their fuel goes up by ONE UNIT (that is, one day it's 80 pence a liter, the next day its 81 pence a liter) that translates to an 8 fold increase. It's the equivalent of $6. 40 a gallon one day and just one increment up, it's $6.48 a gallon. There is no $6.41 a gallon in increments of a penny.
Also, here, in this country, when you pump fuel, the green pump is diesel. The black pump is gasoline. But there, it's the exact opposite. I lost focus once and realized I just put 8 liters of gasoline into my diesel vehicle. I didn't DARE start it. I had to have it towed to some backyard mechanic and he siphoned it out for me and filled it with diesel. The whole thing cost me 50 pounds!
The place is clean, though. I'll give them that. Especially if you're in the midlands. I wasn't living near London. I was closer to Birmingham.
Wales was about 50 miles away. That was AWESOME! I visited that town called Portmeirion, where that show The Prisoner was filmed.
It doesn't take long for you to fall in love with the place. England is SO WEIRD. And if you're in some place away from the tourist spots, your american accent is the KEYS TO THE CITY as far as they're concerned.
