Country or Continent are used commonly for a reference to a people.
There is not an American continent. A North America continent and A South America continent yes. As far as country there is only one America designation and that is The United States of America.
Africa is a Continent and South Africa, Kenya, Ethiopia, Ghana, are countries within the continent. Asia is a large Continent..etc.. lol
So Americans are North American and American, Canadians are North American and Canadians, Africans are Africans and Kenyans, Asians are Filipino and Asian, etc... this is first grade educational subject matter.

Yes, citizens of the United States of America are 'Americans.' Hey, it's what we call ourselves in our own language. Don't like it, tough.
Citizens of the Estados Unidad Mexico are 'Mexicans,' so I don't really see the inconsistancy.
There was, BTW, a move very early on to call the USA the United States of Columbia. Which'd really be a problem, since there actually is a nation called Columbia, while there isn't one called America.
People from North America can call themselves 'North Americans,' if they want, I guess, but it's really pretty silly. There's only three major nations on the continent.
'Latin America' is a common coloquialism for South/Central America plus Mexico, and it makes sense. They could call themselves 'Latin' or 'Latin American' ... if they weren't already going by "The Cosmic Race,' (La Raza Cosmica, I kid you not, they're that full of themselves).
So, when they're not pretending to be Americans, they're pretending to be citizens of the freak'n Cosmos. Seriously, get over yourselves, acquire some bloody patriotism, and identify with your own damn countries!

People from Mexico are Mexicans.
People from South America are South Americans (or they're Argentinians or Brazilians or....)
People from the United States of America are Americans.

Most Ethiopians, Egyptians or Rwandans do not call themselves Africans. They Identify themselves by country origin rather than continent.
The term America is part of our national title: United States of America. You don't hear Brazil of America or Canada of America etc....How often do others call themselves North American rather than Mexican or Canadian?

That's a sematic argument.
Last time I checked, no one from Bolivia or El Salvador was serving in the United States Army, paying taxes to help fund the objectives of the United States, nor doing anything else to improve the status of the United States.
So while Bolivians and El Salvadorians may fall under the larger heading of "Americans", that's where the similarity ends.

Colloquially, both here in America, and elsewhere, "American" is typically used to refer to citizens of the United States of America, whereas Mexicans are almost never described as "Americans" of any type, and South Americans are referred to with "South" so as to avoid confusion... technically, yes, everyone on/born in North or South America is an American... what's your point? It's all just syntax

It's much easier to say "American" than "United Stater" or "United Statist." Plus, the US was the first country in the Americas to be it's own country, so it basically had first pick.

Canada is apart of North America...
Does that make all canadians Americans?
No.....

Personally, this "north American" much prefers to be called Canadian. No point in being any more tied to the US then we need to be.
