Why do people like family guy?

I know people often complain about those who criticize shows, saying that you just shouldnt watch what you dont like, but I still feel the need to talk about family guy.I have watched family guy for a long time now, seen nearly every episode and just watched it ritually, mainly because, often theres very little on tv.Recently though I thought twice about watching it because I realised that not only was it unoriginal and grating, but I also realised that it was VERY unfunny.I watched it because I dint know much better , I was young and easy to please, but now ive begun to see that the show is not very good at all.

theres a # of reasons I came to this conclusion. Firstly, it has stolen every single formally seminal concept from the simpsons. I wouldnt mind if it was simply inspired by the simpsons, but its not.The setup~dysfunctional family(baby, young boy, young girl, dog, mom, dad)is copied and pasted from the simpsons. Its main character is an inferior homer simpson~he is overweight, lazy, bad at his job, incompetent, stupid,a bad husband, has his own catchphrases(hhhhhheeee),a poor father, drunken~the list is infinite.Aswell as that its main ideas, including the random flashback, are again stolen from the simpsons. Its plot arcs are identical ie. starts off with a seemingly irrelavant scene or two, goes to the crux of the story then the alls well denouement.

secondly, the show is extremely repetitive, with the same jokes week in week out.For example, how many times can they lazily useITS TALKING WHEN IT SHOULDNT BE joke.Too often is the joke that HEY its a talking tree stomp/boil/tep/clam/mail boxetc. etc. Aswell as that, the creators have a tedious and irritatingly predictible left wing agenda. They constantly make the same joke about how christians lie(they may well do but you have to be funny aswell a scontroversial),how corporate america is evil, how the government is corrupt and inept etc. etc. Eventually, I just realised that they were swapping `risks` for jokes.Another all to common joke is the RUN ON AND ON joke. This is when a joke takes really long to appen and people are supposed to find it funny,eg. when peter falls and hurts his leg, when lois falls and...,when peter is fighting the chicken, when peter is listing out the failed fox shows( again, many shows have returned having been canceled by fox,but the simpsons was the one that made fox jokes, until the fresh as a breeze family guy)etc.

Thirdly the characters are terrible, with peter being the most dislikable and irritating of all.Imust admit, Stewie is great, and clearly the studio knows that because they constantly use the character because he can make their lacklustre joke seem funnier. Not once did I ever feel any emotion watfamily guy, even though they try to sometimes make it touching, highlighting another weakness.

finally,it is clear to see that the writers of the show are very lazy. Each joke is stretched so far that when it is finished,it is thin as can be.Jokes, even the good ones, are said again and again and go on forever.Aswell as that the jokes often end cheaply, with the bang of somebody hitting the floor or hitting another character always there to be heard. It is lazy humour.

I've tried watching Family Guy, I really have. But I have to admit defeat and say I just don't get it. I really can't understand why it's so popular and why my friends find it so funny.

All I can do is echo your sentiments as I think you've pretty much nailed all the things I find irritating about the show but anyway here goes...

For a start the writing is poor, VERY poor. The plots of each episode are wafer thin which is why they frequently have to resort to nonsensical, unrelated cutaway jokes to pad it out. And even with this padding you can clearly see in some episodes they STILL struggle to fill an entire episode so they then resort to an overly long fight scene with Peter and that chicken or some crappy joke they repeat incessantly (e.g. "the bird is the word"). The show runs for approximately 20 mins but remove the padding and you've got about 13 mins of actual plot.

Then there's the characters. Peter Griffin is clearly a Homer Simpson clone but whereas Homer is a lovable oaf I find Peter hugely unlikeable. Then there's Lois, Meg and Chris who add nothing to the show 90% of the time and could probably be eliminated altogether (ironically Family Guy could have avoided the, justifiable, allegations of being a Simpsons rip off by omitting these easily forgettable characters). I will admit that Stewie and Brian can be funny however the writing team seems to have become overly reliant on them. I can also see the humour from Quagmire and the old, pervy guy (sorry, don't know his name) but these characters are pretty much one joke ponies who can become tiresome very quickly if overused.

Of course I'm not one of these people who thinks Family Guy should be taken off air just because I'm not a fan. I realise there are many people out there who like it a lot. That's fine, I just don't bother watching it anymore. However what I do object to is fans trying to make out that Family Guy is the funniest, most well written show to ever be broadcast. It's not. Its really not. It's contemporaries like South Park, Futurama and The Simpsons tower above it. Family Guy appeals to a very specific type of person who doesn't like to be challenged too much, loves puerile humour, likes easy to get jokes requiring little to no effort and for who something as inconsequential as wit, plot, intelligence and good writing are not important.

It used to be funny, I tried watching it again and now it's plain "random" retarded humor.

    I like American Dad better.
