Bottle feeding a kitten.?

Our cat had four kittens 6 days ago. Three of them are pretty big around 200g but one is only 85g.

The bigger ones have put on about 20-30g in the last couple of days but the runt hasn't put much on at all (well as accurately as you can tell on kitchen scales!). He's been half the size of the others since the beginning.

The little runt seems very feisty and healthy but unfortunately seems to get bullied out of milk by his siblings. Mum is very protective of him but the others being bigger just push him out of the way.

I was considering giving him a bottle as he's probably not getting his fair share. Is this a good idea?

Any advice would be welcome.

No,you can give him a bottle but only as a supplement.consider taking the other kitens for 10 minutes every time they feed and let him feed on his own for that time, and them after 10 m let the others feed at the same time.

mums milk is always better ,it is good she is feisty and i'm sure if you do this she will develop without any problems.

    good luck

add on:let her nurse before theothers as the best milk is the 1st

When my aunties cat had kittens she had a runt, she didnt do anything until they where able to eat solids and that was when she would start putting lactol down in bowls and loads of cat food (there where 9 of them she used to go through 12 pouches a day), after a month of that (she used to also leave dry buiscuit down aswell) the runt put on loads of weight and was as big as all the others! Its up to you what you do, you could just ring your vet and ask their advice as they will be able to give you far better advice than anyone on yahoo!!

Good luck with you kitties (they are a wonderful thing to have)

i agree with phil move the other kittens away from the mother for 10 mins let the lil guy feed on his own if you start giving him bottles hell find it even harder to suckle on his mother , if hes still not gaining weight then bottle feed him lactol bit expenisive but i use it on my kitten (have a runt to ) but really try removing the others first if you take away the one shes protective over she may reject the litter altogether

if he is strong enough to feed take the strong ones out the way after they have finished feeding and place him there, since he is the runt he needs have as much as mums milk as possible to build himself up. make sure he is strong enough to suckle tho and not getting weak otheriwse other methods like tube feeding may need to be used
