Fellow atheists, why should I care about climate change?

Climate change as of right now, at least in most places in America, is still minute compared to the problems some other countries face, other than skewed climate patterns and greater smog in urban areas. The world will be much worse off fifty to a hundred years from now of course if we continue the industrial path we are on, but I'll be deceased by then.

My spouse and I don't have or want any children, and all my friends will also have deceased by the time. Since we atheists don't believe in an afterlife, and must capture the remaining time we have on Earth fully and however we like, why should I care if I engage in behaviors that harm the environment?

Update:

LOL you think I'm a Christian pretending to be an atheist? I dislike both Islam and Christianity, but the former is worse.

I am not convinced we are harming the envoronment. Sure, we are changing the environment, but that has been the case for the past couple million years. Why the big stink about it now in the last couple of decades? It's far to late to make any significant change anyway.

basicly from what you have said there i see no reason exept that you are human, but i can try to give you a reason, say that you had to live into the time that cliamte change did affect the majority of the people on this earth, what whould you say to the person who is starving, malnourished and displaced from their home by climate change, when they asked you, when you had the oppitunity did you try to do something? from the way that you have written this it seems that you know it exists and have some knoledge of it, so basicly are you human, and do you have the idea of humanity in your head, because it is not just YOU that it will effect, it is everyone. also what do you think about the idea that anamals and people that did nothing to cause it will be worst off when it happenes. can you live the rest of your life with this idea, can you sleep at night and just shrug it off as "someone elses problem"? if you can the that bids the question are you human? because the human thing to do is care about others, that has nothing to do with religion!

You are terrible at trolling because atheist actualy have more motive/ reason to care for the enviroment then theists. As an atheist I realize that I am nothing more then a animal on this earth. I am a part of it and I need to protect it. I know that there will not be a second coming of Jesus that will "save the earth" so as a civilization we need to become sustainable so that life can continue to prosper on this planet indefinatly.

From a Christian perspective: god gave us this earth to use so we can do what we want with it in gods name. It dose not matter if we destroy this planet because it is only our temporary home before the second coming of Christ when everything will be made right.

Atheist have every reason to respect this planet. I am actualy pantheist wich is even more so. More info on Pantheism at

Nonsense. The main human contributor to climate change, pollution, is already contributing to the dieing off and mutation of frogs and bees. Evidence strongly suggest that humans follow soon after those two populations.

stunning. there is a few thing very incorrect with the device the place people like that have the potential to wield potential in a function that demands scientific know-how and competence. That became the hallmark of the dark an prolonged time, the place scientific information became rejected as a results of fact of non secular bias.

Its very rare to find an Atheist who is actually willing to make the connection between Atheism and its moral implications if followed through to its ultimate logical conclusion.

Because it's a good thing to do, troll. If you are so insecure about your own religion that you need to pretend to be an Atheists and reinforce the stereotype that they have no morals, you need to rethink your religion.

This is not a religious question. This is a science question. An ethics question. Even an economic question. But it has absolutely nothing to do with religion.

Source(s): Sarcas- I shouldn't need to explain that.
