Healthy drinks while pregnant?
I want to eat as healthy as possible while I'm pregnant (I also want to continue eating healthy when the baby is born so that all of us can remain healthy), but from the way people talk, it seems like everything is bad for you nowadays.
I can have water, as long as it's close to freezing cold, but it's so plain, and sometimes, I just want something with some flavor to it too.
A month or two before we started TTC, I eliminated caffiene and switched to caffeine-free sodas, but I'm trying to eliminate soda altogether (or atleast cut it back to 1 a day). But it just seems like every other alternative is bad for you, even the juices. Whether it's because of high fructose, or added sugar, or natural sugar. I just can't think of anything else to try. Does anyone have any suggestions?
I didn't like milk before I was pregnant (unless I mixed in the chocolate syrup), so I'm expecting it to be cause a gag later in the pregnancy when morning sickness kicks in. I've been trying to stick to orange juice (Tropicana, Calcium), but I'm getting bored with the flavor. I'm not sure, but I'm afraid my Kirkland Cranberry juice (my fav) falls into the bad list with it's sugar and who knows what else they put into it.
What juices are okay to drink? What do I need to check the label for? How much can I have of things like sugar? What if it's natural sugar, like in apples and melons? Is it better to have food and drinks whose nutrition label lists plain old "sugar" than "aspartame"? How's "Sucralose"?

Haha, I just read and atricle today saying now artificial sweeteners (diet colas, diet drinks, etc) are being linked to preterm births, so apparently those are on the no-no list now too. :)
Basically - drink plenty of water, and everything else in moderation. Don't assume you "can't" ever have things that are on the bad list. That would be like saying you can't ever eat ice cream, or chips, or birthday cake. It's commendable to commit to healthy eating - but indulging is part of enjoying life, as long as it's well-balanced with good nutrition.
Natural sugars are not necessarily better. But they're also not necessarily bad. An all-natural fruit juice will have lots of vitamins - but it's not as good as fruit, which also has the same vitamins plus fiber, for a similar calorie content. But compared to something that's a 10% juice "drink", it's not going to give you the same nutritional benefits... although sugar/calorie content will usually be very similar. Sugar is not evil! But OVER-indulging in it is what's bad for you.
I'm with you, I'm not good at just plain water. But, once I get to 48 oz a day, I let myself drink whatever else I want for the rest of the day. By the time I'm already well-hydrated, I can't go too overboard on anything - my bladder won't let me, LOL! But if I want a soda, I let myself. Or juice - I usually hate OJ but I drank a TON of it early on in my pregnancy. Fortunately, I do actually LIKE milk, so I tend to choose that quite often.
Honestly... water REALLY is best. By far. Many herbal teas are also safe and a lot are caffeine-free (though I don't care for tea, personally). Just do your best on your water, and don't beat yourself up about your poorer choices. :) You deserve a few indulgences, especially while you're pregnant!!

There is no medical limit on how much natural sugar you can have. The only concern would be the calories, which can make you gain weight too fast.
If the label says 'juice' then it's juice. It will not have any added sugar or corn syrup or artificial sweetners. (If there are additives, then it's an 'ade' or a 'beverage' or a 'juice drink.'
The healthiest juices are those than contain good stuff other than the calories -- so citrus juices which have vitamin C and potassium are good. (OJ, grapefruit juice. I'm not sure if the Tropicana blends have added sugar; you'd have to check the label. [Orange/pineapple/banana is yummy.]) If you want to limit the sugar, you can try cutting the juice with water.
Other good options -- how about tea? If you want to avoid caffeine, check out the abundance of caffeine free and/or herbal teas available. More flavor than plain water and, if you dont' add sugar, usually calorie free. Or flavored seltzers.

Campbell's Tomato Juice, Campbell's V-8, Welch's 100% Grape (purple), Welch's 100% Grape (white), Lucky Leaf Apple, Tropicana Orange, Northland Cranberry Grape, Juicy Juice Apple Banana, Juicy Juice White Grape, Juicy Juice Punch, Juicy Juice Apple, Juicy Juice Apple Raspberry, Juicy Juice Cherry, Juicy Juice Orange Tangerine, Juicy Juice Strawberry Banana
Also, (Frozen Concentrate) Dole Pineapple, Dole Pineapple Orange-Banana, Dole Pineapple Orange, Welch's 100% Grape Purple, Welch's 100% Grape White, Seneca Apple, Seneca Grape Purple, Orange Juice, and Grapefruit Juice white.

Squeeze some lime or lemon juice into water to make it more interesting.
Also, you can get 100% cranberry juice and blend it with apple juice (you'll have to experiment to find the right blending ratio for your taste) for a tasty juicy drink.

I am far from being a fan of water, but I have been drinking a lot of it and adding freshly sliced lemon to it. It gives it a little zing, is not so boring, and is still all natural and good for you and baby!
Added bonus! I have found that lemon juice helps with my morning sickness, adding the lemon to the water not only keeps me hydrated, but keeps the nausea at bay too!

Milk and water, that is it. Juice is really just sugar water, better to eat the fruit period.
