What is a normal price for a local artist to sell CDs to a record store?

Assuming of course that the record store can be convinced to take a risk on the artist in question.

Let's say the artist gets a thousand discs in jewel cases or "digipaks" made by DiscMakers or some similar company for about $1,000, so each CD costs them about $1. The record store might charge customers as much as $20, if the demand turns out to be great enough.

If the artist charges the store just $2 a copy, it seems to me like they're leaving a lot of money on the table. But if they charge $18, they got greedy and the record store might decide not to even bother.

So my question is, where is the right price?

    Right now?

    At a 40% margin.

If you can get past the legalities of things and convince a store to purchase your product.

The store would like to see a 40% plus margin. Better yet.... a 50% mark-up.
