Cat raw feeding: feeding eggs?

To all the raw feeders out there, what is your stance on eggs? Necessary or not? How do you feed them? I just can't imagine my cat breaking the shell or munching on a cracked egg :-) And what about the Biotin issue?

Wild cats do eat eggs so a domestic cat should be fine with them. Consider though how small most wild bird eggs are and how few a wild cat would find.

So I think raw whole eggs are okay in extreme moderation. A typical chicken egg probably contains at least 10 times the volume of a most wild birds eggs. So be very moderate.

There is the issue with the avidin inactivating biotin and that would be the main concern. The avidin is in the white, not the yolk. Being freer with yolks should be fine. In fact, egg yolks feature in many raw food recipes:http://www.felinefuture.com/?p=1299

Raw egg yolks are also a nice sauce to put on a food your cat is otherwise uninterested in.

You can freeze the whites to use in your cooking.

I cannot imagine a cat doing anything with a whole chicken egg in its shell other than rolling it around. Perhaps a hungry feral cat would figure it out and eat it but I know what mine would do (roll it around).

If you do want to feed some egg-based meals I would lightly cook until the white was done. It would need supplementation if done on a regular basis.

don't feed the cat raw eggs they contain an enzyme called avidin, which decreases the absorption of biotin (a B vitamin). This can lead to skin and hair coat problems. Raw eggs may also contain Salmonella.

You can give a raw egg two or three times a week, but make sure you give the yolk only; the egg white destroys the B vitamins in the food.
