Because it is politically expedient to be taught that all white Anglo Saxons in history are slavers, rapists and colonialists. During a visit to the Caribbean I watched a school cultural show that extolled the virtues of black people in history that have saved the world, the ones they quoted were Alexander Fleming, John Logie Baird, Marconi and Samuel Johnson. When I pointed out that none of them were black so why lie to their pupils. The teacher got very upset that I was questioning her honesty and she would not have it that they were white.

By the way it is HMS Birkenhead.

In the 60's and 70's when I went to school, I feel I had a good education on history, better than my mother had, Now my old school has only 2 white pupils in a class, a massive demographic change, and the new so called multiculturalism of that whole area does not give a damn about the history of the place, or where or who made the establishment infrastructure, Even all the names of the schools changed to accommodate the overrun of immigrant population. Shops and pubs names were systematically removed from history. There is definitely a George Orwell thing going on.

Generally those topics are easier to understand and strike a chord with those learning it. It's basically an attempt to make it less 'boring' for kids who don't care. Just because most of British history has been more political rather than scandalous. Saying that, at A level I studied a part of the history of the Liberals and Conservatives (Gladstone and Disraeli etc) and everyone studies the Suffragettes at some point, as well as younger kids learning about the Anglo Saxons etc. In english at A level I had to stock up on knowledge about Victorian England, so schools will tell you they're "branching out" and trying to "widen knowledge", but I'm currently studying towards a Masters degree in British history, and it's amazing how little people know about how our lives used to be! You'd think people would be more interested in it when it's the place you come from. I lived in Pittsburgh for 3 years and the Americans concentrate their teaching of history on their own country! Kids would be much more interested in learning about where they came from than other countries. It's silly to think that because something ground breaking and theatrical happened in another country, people will prefer to study it. Especially kids! Other places are irrelevant to them!

It really irritates me, as you can see =)

I did not realise that they did not reach children our own history. I went to school in the 50s and 60s and I was taught our own history and also other countries. Perhaps it is one of those subjects that they tend not to mention now, when my son was at school they did not teach Geography (as I know it) it was blended in with another subject.

I have to agree with you we have a rich history in the UK and it is a shame if it is not taught to the children these days, you have to teach them about the good parts and the bad parts of our history.

Do GCSE History, you'll get a chance to learn about Crime and Punishment from Roman times to the current time in, and it's all about England!!

Gorgon, what I "experience" is extremely subjective - i'm totally attentive to which you already know this in the context of your question. the respond provided with the help of Andy ok touches upon the objectivity requirement - for the two useful coaching and pupil comprehension of the textile. no count if it relatively is seen to be adverse with the help of a few and beneficial with the help of others commonly relies upon on the ingredient of the aisle one sits in mirrored image of the historic past lesson that grew to become into discovered with the help of the pupil and taught with the help of the instructor. I for you possibly can want to think of that this lesson could desire to assessment and understood in an purpose thank you to the place the lesson of the historic magnitude could desire to lend itself to a dedication of in no way repeating comparable activities back (i'm in agreeance with Darth above besides). From a pragmatic attitude I doubt this lesson will ever study alongside the strains of the american Revolution, Civil conflict, WW I & II, Korea, Viet Nam, or the Civil Rights circulation. there are various information disregarded of each and every subject count of magnitude. on your extra considerable question of "ought to", my answer is definite it "ought to" study. adverse historic activities have a place for the lesson plans taught in colleges. the only question I surely have is not any count if instructors could have the presence of recommendations to be purpose interior of that comparable lesson plan. Have a good day...celebrity is coming.... Gerry

Because the powers that be want to destroy national identity . History and Geography haven't been taught properly since the 60s .

Surely a Liverpool supporter should be aware of Birkenhead?
