Which is better to expunge or to seal one's criminal record?

    "Expunge" meaning it goes away and is a distant memory. "Sealing" means that the offense(s) will still be on your record but sealed from public view unless a court or subpoena states otherwise.

    As the saying goes: 'Six of one or a half-dozen of the other.'

    BTW - neither of these actions truly removes a criminal record. All it does is create a block on the file to prevent access to specific information. The bad news is that any Federal records check will see through the 'seal.' In addition, any background check where you sign a waiver allowing access to your records will see past the seal.

    And to make it even worse - the high end companies that perform background checks maintain their own databases that are not affected by the expungement or seal. (If you try to work where I do - the company we use for background checks will usually see the exounged/sealed record and if not will be able to notifiy us that it exists.)
