Is Cancun, Mexico dangerous?
I've seen on the US Embassy website that Mexico is along with Iraq and all those other crazy countries on the list of not to visit. But I've been to Cancun and Acapulco before, and while Acapulco was a little shady (friends were buying coke tho), they both were very fun and safe.
Is Cancun dangerous or are those warnings moreso for the rest of Mexico? I'd imagine that Mexico needs to protect Cancun or it's tourism will be destroyed.

The fight between the drug cartels the "Zetas" and the federal police, the state police, and the local police will not effect you at all in Cancun or any other Mexican vacation spot.. You are totally safe in the tourist areas of Mexico. The reports you are hearing are for the northern cities of Mexico alone the boarder with the US to gain access into the US to sell drugs. The hotel zone or the "Isla de Cancun" is totally safe. Yes if you go looking for trouble you will find it. If you want something just ask any waiter or bar tender as they will have anything you want but why you are in paradise just have a Corona and a shot! The town of Cancun which is about 11k away from the hotel zone can be dangerous at night but in groups and along the tourist areas can be very enjoyable.Stop worrying, start planning your trip of a lifetime and relax. Got another question just ask or contact me directly.
As Allen said there are defiantly worst places in Canada and the US for a foreign tourist. And he is correct the tourist police are there to help tourists and they actually do help and if a tourist gets too drunk they help you get back to your hotel.

I've been to Cancun a few times. The last being last November. Never heard of anyone going missing. We took taxis several times, day and night, and found the drivers quit helpful in taking us to some nice clubs and back to the resort. I did hear from some Mexican people, that the police will keep a close eye on the young people when they are drinking to much, and try to keep them from getting into trouble. Cancun can't afford to get a bad name. Tourism is very important to Cancun.
Cancun is a very safe place to visit. Like anywhere, use common sense. If you are going out to the clubs, make sure you are not alone. Don't drink to much, and stay away from drugs. I've heard Mexican jails are not nice places to be in. If you want to do tours, book through your resort.
The problem areas of Mexico are along the US and Mexican boarder. Not a safe place to be. Cancun on the other hand is probably safer than some parts of the US, and Canada.
There is always a few people that get into trouble, but never tell the whole story. They would rather blame others for their stupidity.
Go and enjoy.

The punk-*** narcos is getting too close to the hotels in cancun. On May10th 2016, My step son and his friends were approached by drug dealers at a restaurant. When they said that they did not want any drugs, they were jumped by at least 10 people as the police watched and did nothing. Barely alive, they were dropped off at the airport by a taxi and flown back to California where they finally received medical care.
They received no help from the cancun police, hotel, nor the hospitals. They were too scared, fearing those narcos assholes. And the Mexican president is in the pockets of the dangerous drug cartel.
Go there at your own risk. If you loose your life, your family will Not get justice. If you go there seeking justice, you will be among the missing. Courtesy of cancun finest.
At least in the US, there's a chance of justice.

Never ever travel outside of the tourist area Stay at your hotel and the beach. Don't get in a cab, public transportation or go wondering down the street. I've heard stories of college kids being harassed and threatened by the police in Cancun. I've heard of one almost being framed for possession of illegal drugs unless they pay off the police. After they paid them off the police followed them to their hotel and pretty much stalked them waiting for them to leave. They had to contact their parents and they snuck out the back door and headed straight to the airport vowing to never return. Also people disappear all the time in Cancun so becareful

It's the same thing to say "is it dangerous to visit New York?" There are some places where you don't want to be because crime rate is relatively high, but there are many other places where you can be fully safe (and that's a big majority). You don't need to worry more than if you were visiting any other country with good tourists affluence.

uh, no this is not. And for the guy that mentioned that his buddy broke his neck by skill of a huge wave there...........the water grow to be surprisingly calm and serene when I went. actual, it grow to be plenty calmer in my opinion than the seashores in California, Florida, and Acapulco. in my opinion, of the 4, Cancun has the main secure waters. Now Acapulco, thats some loopy waves!

It depends on why you are going. If you are going for a romantic get away it is very safe. If you are going to search for illegal drugs and late-night binge drinking, then it is very dangerous! Any foreign country can be very dangerous if you want to abuse illegal drugs. This is like walking around with a giant flag that says "ARREST ME" LOL.

No it's not. You just have to use common sense. It's dangerous only in the BORDER towns.
