Who pays a Soldier, Marine, Sailor, Airman's wages?
I keep seeing people saying that people who serve in the military keep forgetting it's the civilians who pay their wages. It's civilians who pay taxes.
I don't know about everyone else who served, but I payed both state and federal taxes every year. So, do we not also contribute?
Todd, your right, my goof. "paid"

From an Airmen: I just got back from a ceremony today and as the last note by the installation commander, he said that the united states air force is the most feared air force in the world, because the united states air force has the distinct capability to locate a target anywhere in the world and bomb it anytime. But he concluded that this is made possible by airmen, people who makes our air force the best in the world. And no you don't think one bit that you are safest in the airplane. Airmen are told to be flexible and you may see combat sooner than you think. I'm in computer networking and one of our airman got sent out to do a 365 days in afgahnistan, manning a gun on top of a humvee. So, you can believe the rumors, but eventually you will experience the truth. Good luck.

I am a veteran...so I can see where you think that and I agree to some point.
I also am aware that there are more civilians paying taxes for our government to run, and the military is a portion of those taxes....
I used to work with a nurse who was a civilian who threw up the taxes thing all the time until she seemed a bit rude about it. I don't like it when people get rude about it...it is like telling the cop that pulled you over when you were wrong, that you pay his salary.
But I do believe that the military is paid by many civilians...and for that we should be thankful for our jobs and our ability to serve and we should be good stewards of tax payer money. We all know that there is waste, fraud and abuse within any government organization...so we should try to stop that type of stuff when we see it...

"Civilians" don't pay the military. The government does. That's an important distinction. The people surrender a certain amount of their native freedom and sovereignty--and money--to the government in exchange for services and security. The government, in turn, spends it however they see fit. The people can change the government if they don't think they're getting their money's worth, but it is incorrect to say that the people are the government, and therefore incorrect to say that the people carry out any particular action of the government, such as raising and supporting armies.

It's not all taxes, the expenditure is helped financed by the commerce U.S. governments economic ventures make abroad.
I'll never understand why conservatives constantly call for tax cuts yet want a stronger military though, what's going to finance it?!

We as taxpayers pay for all government expenses, including the militarys pay. I have only heard this phrase in reference to the core value that the military is civilian controlled. Used in this manner, it is not an insult to those men and women who serve, but a reminder that the militaries purpose never to be anything but a arm of the civilian government. This is considered a given in America, but it is not this way in almost all of the rest of the world.
If this phrase was used in a demeaning way, implying that the military are slaves to civilians, or something like that, then the person who said it is a fool. No matter what your views on our current wars, we should always respect the military and those brave men who fight and die.
God bless you, and thank you for your service.

The answer to that question would be the citizens of America. They are the ones that pay taxes that are used to pay the salaries of the men and women in the military.
But, who do you think provides the freedom for you to find a job and work and be at peace without having to dodge bombs and missiles from al-Qaeda?
Who guarantees the right of freedom of speech that you are exercising right now?
Who guarantees your freedom of religion?
Who guarantees your right to vote?
Citizens contribute to the greatness of America...but most are not asked to sacrifice their own lives for everyone else. Soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines shed blood and lay down their lives willingly for everyone in America.
Do you want to pay taxes or do you want to walk in front of that machine gun? Our sacrifice is much more...that's why there's a special holiday in our honor.

Honest working Americans pay taxes that pay our salaries. Just like they don't have a legal right to not pay those taxes we don't have a legal right to choose who gets the freedoms we defend.

Since military pays federal taxes, this means they contribute to their own paycheck. It would be easier to not charge them federal taxes. Probably less paperwork too.

The military pays taxes too, so they are somewhat paying their own paychecks, the rest is other taxpayer money.
