New study reports that "female teachers are holding boys back"?

I have not looked at the study myself, here are some quotes from a UK tabloid article on it.

"Women teachers are holding back boys by reprimanding them for typically male behaviour, according to a study out today.

"They are reinforcing stereotypes that boys are ‘silly’ in class, refuse to ‘sit nicely like the girls’ and are more likely to indulge in ‘schoolboy pranks’.

Women teachers may also unwittingly perpetuate low expectations of boys’ academic achievement and encourage girls to work harder by letting them think they are cleverer."

"The research mainly implicates women teachers, since nearly 90 per cent of primary school teachers are female. It warned that school staff find boys’ play, such as wielding toy guns, ‘particularly challenging and difficult’.

Boys are punished and urged to conform to a more feminine style of play instead of being taught how to play responsibly with their preferred toys.

Bonny Hartley, the study’s lead author, said: ‘By seven or eight years old, children of both genders believe that boys are less focused, able, and successful than girls – and think that adults endorse this stereotype. There are signs that these expectations have the potential to become self-fulfilling in influencing children’s actual conduct and achievement.’"

The mens movement (and Yahoo G/S despite all its nonsense and fun) is consistently ahead of the mainstream on these issues.

What are your opinions on gender seperation in education?

Update:

Dame A. the tabula rasa theory, or social constructionism ot as I loke to call it, the new creationism has been largely debunked by the scientific community, the blank slate is a political construct, not something that is based on fact or reality.

Update 2:

DL

Whats changed is that now the schools are running a social engineering project on our children.

Update 3:

EDIT to Dame A. the tabula rasa/ social constructionism or as I like to call it, the new creationism has been largely debunked and dismissed by the scientific community, the blank slate is a political construct, not something that is based on fact or reality

This is a very unfortunate truth, imo. I volunteer in a classroom of children the same approximate age as those in the study and the differences between the boys and the girls is not necessarily what one would expect.

The girls are confident, speak clearly, are appropriately socially adept and eager to engage academically. The boys are more reserved, quiet, do not seem enthusiastic academically and are really quite shy. Working 1:1 with them in a literacy program revealed some sad observations. The girls flew through their sight words with confidence and accuracy; the boys were self defeating, saying things like "I can't do it, everyone knows I can't do it, stop trying" or "Im just stupid, everyone knows it" or "reading is a girl thing, I'm a boy, I can't do it". Obviously it was incredibly self defeating. On the whole, the boys themselves seemed defeated re academics. I think probably yes, they are receiving the messages that the study suggests.

One part of the study stood out to me especially:

"Boys are punished and urged to conform to a more feminine style of play instead of being taught how to play responsibly with their preferred toys."

The message of defeat is at every turn; boys cannot even play like boys anymore. All the things that we think of as being stereotypically 'boy' have been banned by a zero tolerance policy. Not only are boys expected to sit still all day in a classroom where they are consistently told they can't excel, they can't even let off that steam at recess. To my knowledge, no one has ever died from the finger gun in a good game of cops n robbers.

At this point, I think there is some value to be had in having male teachers teach boys and female teachers teach girls and have the whole thing separate.

Does the actual study or just the mail's editorialising indicate that its female teachers. Hartley herself uses the word adult while the mail uses the inserts the word women and then notes "The study drew no distinction between the beliefs and classroom practices of male and female teachers" i.e. the study can't really speak for you or the mail's idea. Hardly shocking that the Mail would come out with this given its target readership. More to the point women teachers have outnumbered male teachers long before the boy crisis since the 1870s and through 1960-80, suddenly in 1990 this idea resurfaced. Its hardly old though it was one of the principled behind setting up the boy schools because men were being feminised in the home.

In fact her research just points out that schools characterise boys in a certain way(where hartley says adults endorse stereotypes the mail writes women urge boys to act in feminine ways-not the study). Also the researcher suggests that teachers reinforce and expect boys low performance as masculine so I don't think it works alongside the argument that teachers are surpressing masculinity as the mens movement would argue. and many other studies show that laddish behaviour is important in determining antiswot attitudes as well. While boys are expected to act this way girls that do are harshly criticised according to research by diane ray.

Its unusual that social constructions don't exist. Em except in the social construction of boys underperfomance by female teachers according to you. and only the state and women can socially construct("engineer") things not churches, communities familes or peers- What a double standard.

If you wish to show your small child to see common words that will likely come across and which can be conditions to standard phonetic principles then things you need is here https://tr.im/tcmyU , Children Learning Reading program.

Children Learning Reading is a phonetic centered examining system. This means that it first shows your son or daughter the letters of the alphabet and the seems they make. After that it applies this understanding to simply help your child find out words based on the sounds the words make. This system was created to train the basic "code" for examining initially. Only following this has been mastered are exceptions, complications, and variations introduced.

I don't believe its helpful to either sex. For one thing it enforces gender stereotypes. Also how on earth are you going to ensure that in an area you can have male teachers teach boys and female girls? You might in a city but rural areas there is typically only one school in reach. At some point boys and girls have to be educated together or work together if this is left till they are adult it becomes a very unnatural interaction and can certainly cause problems in work. People educated in single sex schools frequently don't work well in teams.

Personally I don't believe in the idea that there are different boys and girls types of play anyway. Girls are pushed into stereotyped "Girlish" behaviour in play from the time they are young and I'm not the only one who moans that they were excluded from the more fun activities fo the boys. I think the problem is more that teachers tend to like a stereotyped docile child. Now due to sexism this tends to be more girls than boys. What we need to do is stop teachers beleiving that being a passive accepting quiet person is the only and best way to be.

And with a male teacher people assume that the boys will be allowed to rough house in class, run in the halls, be loud and disruptive?

    Nope.

Male teachers will expect the same thing.

For ALL students to sit on their pockets, keep their eyes and ears on teacher, raise hand to speak, turn in assignments on time, be punctual and respect others.

Learning these things is an important life skill...one they will need to be successful in their careers.

It's funny how people who stated boys should behave themselves in class, got bombarded with thumbs downs.

wth? Do you think boys should just be allowed to swing from the rafters or something..geez.

We've always had women teachers. Since the thirties. What's changed?

Boys never played with toy guns when I was at school. What's changed?

Boys now play football. Even girls don't play with dolls anymore.

Something has changed - what could it be?

The lack of discipline? Teachers no longer know how to discipline unruly children and there are more unruly children than ever.

Yesterday there was a report in the same newspaper (not a tabloid, by the way) about a naughty girl and the male teacher who got into trouble. He said the same thing: children are not disciplined properly.

    Why don't people listen?

It wouldn't suprise me but I would never believe *anything* in the Daily Mail, unless it was in the other newspapers too. They just love to exaggerate, twist the truth and bullshit. The Guardian, Mirror, independant and Sun coming out with this would hold 10X the credibility.

However, RE toy guns- as far as I know these are not allowed in any schools, just as they are not encouraged in public anymore- because they are toy weapons they are therefore not allowed at all. Same as toy knives, toy whips, etc. The avergae child would get away with playing with them at home but even playing with them out in the park would probably get the police coming over for a stern word. everything's a bit crazy OTT like that but the schools just follow that example.

They do need to focus more on the different ways children learn but with so many kids needing special attention and special lesson plans because they are low ability, ADHD and autistic, do you really think teachers are able? Or do you think that perhaps they follow the set pattern of the cirriculm because it's universal so that they can focus on helping the lowest ability groups- boys and girls with learning difficulties?

It's not fair or right, but in order to develop more plans like this you need one thing- more TAs. More male teachers in the UK would be good because the kids do like them, but those teachers would have to follow the set cirriculm just as the female, otherwise OFSTED would have them removed. More TAs gives the needy kids more help and frees up the teacher to try and challenge the cirriculm.

However telling girls they are cleverer is unfair to the boys, and not at all constructve to their education. The stereotyping should go, teachers should challenge it if brought up. I do believe that there is talk by the Coalition of setting up 'Academys' that would cater to different styles while teaching, however whether this will happen with budget cuts and uncertainty over teaching styles is uncertain.#

I don't agree with 'getting rid of ability groups'. You give a child with low abilty a high ability paper and they'll be in tears and disheartened. You have to teach at their pace and progress and encourage them at that speed, not force them to hate subjects. Just as give a high ability child a low paper to do and they'll become bored, disruptive and misbehave. Children are different levels, the exams sort them into them and teachers work to 'up' them through different stages. If it becomes clear a child is high ability but just does badly in xams then they are given extra help to get them into 'exam mentality' and placed in the high group.

Well its certainly a interesting study.

Personally my education seemed okay too me. I mean yeh their were more boys in the ''bottom'' class, and yeh their were alot of girls in the top classes with me. And yes their were mostly boys in detention. But i didnt really think of it as sexist.
