Laptop:
Laptops usually cost slightly more than a comparable desktop. However, prices have dropped in recent years and laptop prices are very competitive.
Laptops may not be as easy to upgrade with new technology. Be sure to configure a laptop with the features that you need.
It's completely self-contained. This means the only things you need are the laptop and power cord.
You can get a wireless internet adapter built in so you can connect to the internet without plug-in.
If you live in a small space that simply cannot house you and a desktop PC at the same time.
If your laptop breaks, only the company that made it will be able to fix it, and after the warranty expires they will be happy to fix it for you, of course, at whatever the going rate happens to be.
The portability of a laptop makes this a more attractive item to be stolen if it is not properly secured.
Desktop:
Pay less and get more.
Desktops are usually much more expandable. You can usually more easily add a new video card, larger hard drive, a new processor, or other components when technology changes.
Desktop computers are generally more secure due to their size and lack of portability.
Maintaining your desktop pc and having repairs and upgrades made can usually be done at numerous places and at a much more reasonable cost.
When it comes to speed of downloads the desktop pc gives you more for your dollar.

When buying a new computer, laptop vs desktop pc, the choice can be a difficult one to make. As both choices have the capability of running the same software the decision may boil down to what fits best with your lifestyle. Are you on the go a lot and need the portability or is most of your computing done at home? What's your personal preference? Give it some thought and weigh the pros and cons.

400-700 price range won't get you much of a laptop. You get a laptop because you want portability. If you don't need portability get a desktop. With a desktop whatever you get now you can easily expand on. For example, most gamers by a top on video card (think 400-700 for that card alone). The point is that when you need more speed later it will be cheaper to expand your desktop than buy a new laptop.

Desk tops pros: usually have a longer life span. You can have more accessories added. They can be upgraded more easily as far as motherboard, audio card, graphics card, RAM and processors, and power supply. Cons: not portable, need a separate monitor
Laptop pros: it's portable. Battery life now is much better than a year ago. Many batteries will last for 6 to 8 hours, depending on program use. ( Lithium-ion battery ) Most places have free wireless internet service. Cons: shorter life expectancy than a desk top. ( 4 to 5 years ). Not upgradeable except for some top of the line "gaming" computers. ( Alienware ) They have integrated circuits, which means the graphics card and audio card are a part of the motherboard. If one fails, the whole motherboard must be replaced.

Speaking in terms of basic POS computers that are for internets and email, desktop is cheap but laptop is convenient. Speaking in terms of gaming, Desktops are better...there no need for mobile gaming, unless you live in your moms basement and like to show your 1337 13udd13z your cool comp. You can get a desktop with x power for $400, but the laptop equivalent (if you buy a dell or something) could be up to $800
