How did your labour start? Did you know it was true labour right away?

I am 38 weeks and just curious, i get alot of braxton hicks, but even when they get a bit painful, the pain is up high and I know from reading in here that labour is usually down low. Just wondering if labour starts softly for most people and progresses to real pain or what. I also read in a lot of answers that often the waters don't break until later. Just want to know some other womens experiences, thanks.

I didnt clue in for about an hour that it was labour!! I was 41 weeks(but I was also induced, was told to come in next morning, but never thought Id go into labour that night)

    Hi -

with my daughter, I was 39 weeks pregnant. I really just thought I'd get to 40 weeks before having her. Sounds sooo stupid now, but when I awoke with pains, It felt exactly like I had an irritable tummy and I sat on the toilet for about 30 minutes waiting to go (number 2 - sorry tmi) and it was atleast an hour before a light bulb in my head went off and I realised the pains came and went every 5 minutes or so!! I knew then and my waters broke about 3 hours later.

With my son, I was also 39 weeks. It was obvious labour as I got up during the night to go to the toilet and as soon as I got back into bed, my water broke!

My waters broke! It was pretty obvious! But a week before, I was having contractions with a lot of pain, so I went to the hospital where they checked me, recorded contractions ever 3 minutes, but no dilation or effacement, so I was kept one night for observation because I didn't realise I was in labour with my son at 37 weeks (no pain, I didn't feel the contractions), only for a routine appointment where I was offered a cervical exam did they discover that I was 5cm along with a bulging bag of waters!
