Seriously, is it bad for your health or is the media using it to sell news, or both?

High Fructose Corn Syrup is a man-made sweetener that is in a lot of processes foods today. As long as you don't have too much of it you will be alright. Try to stick to more natural things, not so much processes and man made stuff. Processed foods like little debbies and stuff have alot of chemicals in them that the human body isn't necessarily meant to have to deal with. High fructose corn syrup is just like anything else though, as long as you don't over do it you should be fine.
