Have you ever heard a rational person say "Liberalism is a Mental Disorder"?

Seems to me that anyone who says that very unoriginal sentiment is just being emotional and saying it because it makes them feel better about themselves. Instead of actually trying to understand the liberal point of view they'd rather just dismiss it as insanity and plug their ears to any other point of view but their own. I'm no liberal by any means but I can't understand why anyone would think this is an even remotely intelligent thing to say. Agree or disagree

Update:

@Marina: Actually I hadn't seen you write that. dozens of people say it on here every day--like I said, it's unoriginal. Sorry to disappoint.

And most of the people who say that believe the world is less than ten thousand years old. I don't let the nutters get to me.

No. Starting with the irrational hate mongerer that coined the phrase, I have yet to see it used by a rational person. Most answers to your question will back that up. It is one of those dime a dozen right wing talking points that Cons throw out when they have nothing to contribute. Therefore, we see it quite often on this site which in the last two years has become a cesspool of right wing hate.

Agree. I see this most often on the internet, where anonymity, or perhaps a sense of dissonance from consequences in general, causes people to speak more radically and abrasively than they would in real life. I'm in high school and have a couple friends who are quite conservative, and we don't see eye-to-eye on many issues. However, we're good friends and are always respectful to one-another.

That's my personal experiences anyways. Actually, now that I think about it, I've had more confrontational arguments with conservative adults I know than conservative peers, which is rather ironic since adults are supposed to be more level-headed and mature. None, however, have said something like "liberalism is a mental disorder."

To accept the liberal point of view, you must discard reason. To understand it, you must only acknowledge that it is the abandonment of reason. The discarding of reason is a rejection of reality, which by it's nature could be considered a mental disorder.

When I say it's a rejection of reason, I do not mean to be insulting--I mean that a lot of liberalism derives from philosophers like Hume who overtly reject it.

I think that more often than not, it is the refusal to think. There are a few policy heads that do outright reject reason, but most people follow along because it's easier to think in catch-phrases and bumper stickers. This use of cultural memes is usually how liberal ideas are propagated. "What's good for the goose is good for the gander," and "Whatever floats your boat," for example express collectivist and relativist philosophy, however most people would not dig into them as such. In this way, a philosophy is embedded into a subconscious.

In short, it's no more a mental disorder than it is a mental disorder to hold any belief system without being able to have a rational, reasoned epistemological basis for doing so.

As someone else said YES all of them.

And it is far from 'just being emotional' which is what those you side with actually do.

They always get defeated in any actual discussion about the issues and then always start name calling and making personal insults against the conservatives who defeat them so easily.

They are also homophobes with their anti gay slurs directed at Tea

    Partiers and vicious antisemites.

In fact, not one conservative has EVER said anything antisemitic, not one who supported Bush and supported America fighting BACK against the terrorists in Iraq has EVER said anything antisemitic.

It's a maturity thing. They haven't yet been put in a position to fend for themselves, or grow up yet. Not get older, Grow Up.

You're addressing me personally, aren't you? I wrote it in one of my answers. :) I understand the liberal point of view perfectly...which is why I have come to the conclusion all on my own that it is a mental disorder. And you're the one who appears to be getting emotional. Nice sickle in your avatar by the way. That in and of itself pretty much takes away any hope you have of coming off as rational.

I never said I coined the phrase. Sorry to disappoint.

Take it as a compliment. Especially when people like Christine O'Donnell are what they consider sane.

Source(s): Ode to Christine: I don't want anybody else When I think about you I touch myself Ooh I don't want anybody else Oh no, oh no, oh no

The people who call liberalism a mental disorder are just being polite. They don't want to tell you what they really think.
