hCG levels after supposed miscarriage?

Ok, so I am going to try and give as much detail as possible. I went on Depo in August '09 had too many side effects so in December '09 I switched to NuvaRing. As of April 2010 I still had no menses so I came off NuvaRing and my husband and I decided if I got pregnant then great but we weren't going to go crazy trying. Well July 3, 2010 I had a crazy dizzy spell come on and it didn't go away for a while and I still have spells here and there, I had a CT Scan, an MRI, went on multiple medications, Valium, Meclazine, Zofran, and Klonopin to try and control the dizziness but nothing worked. I also took multiple pregnancy test both HPT and the hospital and doctor performed many which came out negative. I didn't take anything for more than 2 weeks, on August 5 I took a HPT and got a positive, so I called my family doctor and they got me in right away and confirmed pregnancy as well as a quantitative blood test. Everything went well, I had a scan done on August 24 which showed a perfectly healthy 6 week 1 day fetus. My first prenatal appt was September 1, everything checked out fine. They scheduled another scan for September 13 to confirm the EDD. I was so excited to see my baby again I took my mom and cousin along and got the most shocking news of my life, that the baby was in fetal demise, and there was no heartbeat. I should have been 9 weeks on the day of the scan and the fetus measured 7 weeks 5 days. Now here is where the confusion comes into play. My hCG is where it should be for a 9-10 week pregnancy not for fetal demise at 7-8 weeks. I had my levels taken August 5, September 1, 14, 17 the only numbers I don't have are from September 1, but on August 5 it was 50, September 14, 246,601 and dropped very little on September 17 to 238,720. Which is about right because between 9-11 weeks your numbers reach as high as they will go and then they fall and level off for the remainder of the pregnancy. The scan on the 13 was not very thorough in my eyes, lasted an entire 5 minutes tops, and in that time, she measured my ovaries, cervix, uterus, fetus and spent maybe 30 seconds on the heartbeat. I am not wanting any false hope by any means but I am so confused because my numbers are where they should be, I have absolutely NO spotting, bleeding, or cramping, I still have my morning sickness and everything else. I am taking horrible care of myself this week because of stress not eating, sleeping, drinking as I should nor taking my vitamins. Please help me make sense of this, I do have an appt tomorrow morning to schedule a D & C which I am not comfortable with at all! Any advice is appreciated! Thanks!

Update:

We had another scan this morning and the pregnancy is no longer viable, this time everything was explained in great detail and we will try again when we are ready! Thank you all for your answers!

I've read of similar situations...where after detecting a miscarriage the HCG has gone up. It means the body is delayed in catching up with the situation. It will tie in with why you haven't experienced bleeding or cramping...this should occur once your hcg begins to drop.

The person conducting your check-up must have felt confident enough, even within a short time that the information they gave you was accurate.

Have a read of the article (I've pasted a link below) you're not alone...

I'm so sorry to hear this and am wishing you all the very best x

Your HCG is where it should be for a 9-10 week pregnancy because that is what its supposed to be..........you are still 9-10 weeks pregnant. Your baby doesn't make HCG, so HCG doesn't go down because baby is in demise. Your body makes HCG, so as long as your body thinks its still pregnant (which it is), it still makes HCG. At this stage in pregnancy, you might miscarry naturally, but you are far enough along that your body might never reject baby........which is why a D&C might be necessary.

They should do another scan before the procedure tomorrow. If they don't offer one, demand one. At 9 weeks, a fetal heartbeat should be easy to detect (in way less than 30 seconds) and if they don't see one, its not there. I'm sorry :o(

If you miscarried utterly your Hcg phases will drop, now not expand. Did the health facility ship you for a experiment following the miscarriage simply to verify that the whole thing was once utterly expelled?

Ask for a second opinion, i was scheduled for a d&c but was scaned prior to surgery only to find i was still pregnant. I failed to attend 2 prior appointments for the d&c in a different clinic as i was convinced i was still pregnant.

In my case, i had been carrying twins, i did lose one, but the other had developed normally. He is now a happy healthy 9 yr old.

I kept being told that the hcg takes time to drop but i had an instinct and no matter how much i reasoned with myself, i couldn't shake the feeling i was still pregnant. Listen to your body, it maybe trying to tell you something as mine was.

    All the best :-)
