Brochure for our forthcoming cruise says that holders of Israeli or Swiss passports will not be allowed ashore in Libya. Israel I can understand, but why Switzerland?

Short answer: They arrested Gaddafi's son and daughter-in-law for nearly beating to death their servants.
Long Answer:
Relations between the states began to sour in July 2008 when Switzerland arrested Libyan leader Gaddafi's son and daughter-in-law for allegedly beating their servants at a hotel. The two were detained for two days and released.
Muammar al-Gaddafi retaliated against Switzerland "by shutting down local subsidiaries of Swiss companies Nestlé and ABB in Libya, arresting two Swiss businessmen for supposed visa irregularities, canceling most commercial flights between the two countries and withdrawing about $5 billion from his Swiss bank accounts".
To attempt to ease the tension between the countries and get the release of the two Swiss businessmen, Swiss President Hans-Rudolf Merz went to Tripoli in August 2009 to apologize for the arrests. This was criticized by the Swiss press and public, with numerous calls for his resignation.
On 18 September 2009, the Libyan authorities moved the two Swiss businessmen, Max Göldi and Rachid Hamdani (the latter holding Tunisian-Swiss dual citizenship), from the Swiss embassy in Tripoli to an undisclosed location. In response on 4 November Switzerland said it was suspending an agreement to normalize relations with Libya and five days later the Libyan government handed the men back to the embassy.

Gadhafi's son Hannibal and his wife were detained briefly by Geneva police in 2008 for beating their servants with a belt and a coat hanger. Since then, Tripoli has denied visas to Europeans; threatened to cut off oil supplies; and in August enjoyed the spectacle of Swiss President Hans-Rudolf Merz apologizing for his country's treatment of Hannibal—an apology meant to secure the Swiss businessmen's release by Sept. 1.

One of the latest things the Swiss have done to pizz off muslims is that they BANNED minarets, a 'key feature' of mosques.

Might be a 'retaliation' kind of thing, doing absolutely nothing that really bother the Swiss (why would they want to go to friggin' Libya anyhow?) but cutting into their own tourism revenues.
"I hates you Sviss, so I slap myself" Brilliant, right?

Not sure. Did they help Israel in some way?
Source(s): Unless they are holding onto Libyan money and not releasing it - that's my guess. - Anonymous1 decade ago
