Cat people I need your help! Will regular 8' vinyl or smooth wood fencing work for keeping in cats?

I have some cats and they were outdoor at one time so they want out really badly plus I still feed some tame strays but I am terrified of the town traffic and while we have been looking for country properties, they are either 2 expensive 2 far from town 2 run down etc so I am thinking of fencing in our whole yard here in town with gates at the driveway any suggestions??Thanks

Update:

I have a large property with trees and shrubs and things and i will play with them and I feed them and vet them all I want is for them to LIVE and not get hit by cars sorry but I disagree with you!

You are so right, fencing in isn't cruel. Dying under the wheel of a car is careless and senseless!!

Cat fencing is expensive and if that isn't an option then you can get a cat proof top that goes onto a fence panel, it faces inwards at an angle.

Google it, you'll find lots of discussions.

Hope it works out well for you, all!

Unless you want to put up a 12 foot high fence, most all cats will get over any kind of fence you put up just by climbing and/or jumping over.

I suggest you build or buy a large cat enclosure (top has to be enclosed for the cats to sit outside in safety.

Cats can jump at least 6' up, you'd have to get a cat specific fence to keep them in. AND make sure no tree branches overhang it from the inside.

Go to google.com and type in 'cat containment fencing'. There are a few different types, but no, a straight fence won't hold them in. Not by itself.

You will have to use something in addition to the fencing to keep cats in. They have cat fence-in systems that you mount on the inside of your fence.

Or use a specially made fence:

    Or a cat enclosure:

Don't forget to make sure their vaccinations are up to date and you start using a flea preventative like Revolution.

Good luck to you and your kitties!

you shouldent do that. cats need to be free and go were they want. it is common for a cat to be hit by a car but thats just the risk that you have to take. if you want a cat you have to deal with it. dont fence them in.. its cruel.
