Why don't Republican Senators Want Us To Know Who Pays For Political Ads?
Once again the Republicans in the United States Senate voted to unanimously to block passage of legislation that would require both corporations and unions to disclose when they are paying for a political advertisements and contributing to organizations funding political ads.
Republicans said that having to disclose would 'chill' political speech. What is that all about? How does saying I paid for this advertisement chill political speech? Isn't the truth of the matter that they want those that fund ads to remain unknown so that people viewing the ads might not think that those funding it might be promoting their own interests in such ads?
When someone gives you their opinion on a matter would you take it seriously if they wore a mask while doing so?
No it is untrue that the legislation could not force disclosure. It certainly can. What it cannot do is prevent corporations and unions from contributing directly but it can certainly force disclosure when they do so.
Liberty? It is liberty to be able to find out information. It is tyranny to have it hidden.

Republicans are always against disclosing information - especially when they're in someone's pocket. Some Dems can be just as bad. It wasn't that long ago that there was a big fight over campaign finance reform. Neither party wants reform when the more more money is in your coffers, the more votes you get. It turns politicians into money whores, and lapdogs for lobbyists.
It's partly the voters fault; they're the ones that allow themselves to be swayed by all those negative ads. In Canada, no candidate would dare to run the kind of negative ads that are routinely aired in the US. They'd automatically lose, no matter which party they run for.

Anymore....I have learned that issues need to be researched. As an example, the Immigration issue in Arizona....I wondered why now 9 years after 9/11...by chance I received a phone call from a friend telling me about a man in Arizona who for the last couple years has been trying to pass that law....seems Arizona is privatizing prisons and the more occupants the more money from the federal government.
And just recently...with the tax cuts for the wealthy...and how the republicans say it would hurt small business....imagine my surprise learning that small business is NOT a small number of employees or a small profit. Most of the huge business that file as S corporations are categorized as small business. One example is the beer distributor of McCain's wife...seems these "small businesses can defer their tax liabilities up to 20 years...and in most cases they pay no taxes. Why the hype? These small businesses paid politicians for these legal tax loopholes and are now funneling monies to the RNC.
So anymore...I try to investigate. Clearly the republicans are for the corporations and not the people. Boehner said last night...they (republicans) would be just like they have always been. So that message tells me, never vote republican. They had control for 8 years...of course there are those who will say from 2007 to 2009, it was the Dems...but these people are wrong. They conveniently forget the presidential veto...that Bush used a lot those last two years.
Another example is the tea party...with Don Blankenship touting his alliance with the tea baggers...that tells me they are the minions of the greedy...and are not to be trusted. King Coal who is responsible for the deaths of coal miners in WV...and who bought a judge to ignore his illegal actions. Blankenship should be in jail for murder.

The loophole-ridden package exempts large nonprofits with 500,000 or more members. Behemoth labor unions get preferential treatment. Bradley Smith, former Federal Elections Commission chairman, noted that the law places radical speech-squelching restrictions on companies’ ability to run independent political ads: “(I)f you’re a company with a government contract of over $10 million (like more than half of the top 50 U.S. companies) or if you’re a company with more than 20 percent foreign shareholders, you can’t even mention a candidate in an ad for up to a full year before the election. … There are no similar prohibitions for unions representing government contractors or unions with foreign membership.”

The Supreme Court ruled to allow Corps and other groups to directly pay for these ads. They overturned a 100 year old ruling just this past year. The Sup. Court wouldn't make them disclose their affiliation with any ads anyways, so the senate debate is null.

Because the Rethugs are the ones receiving the vast majority of this dirty money. And they know that if those "Energy Tomorrow" ads had a disclaimer stating they were financed by BP and ExxonMobil, a lot fewer people would give them credit (and it's sad that so many people DO pay attention to such bile, but that's another issue...)

Actually it is not just limited to Republicans, in my opinion both parties and the incumbents are equally as guilty, 4 years ago on answers I asked if we should make our politicians wear Nascar type uniforms with their sponsors labels on them, I still think that should apply across the board today.Amazing that we can agree on some issues

According to the FPPC rules, any candidate, committee for a candidate or a committee that supports or opposes a candidate or a measure, must state who paid for any ad, print or media, if they received more than $50k from ONE contributor who was the sole supporter of the ad.

Anyone want to bet that diatribe came directly out of the DNC propaganda office? BTW, quite a bit of it is either false or misleading (probably intentional).

Democrats have used lop holes for years to allow corporations under the name of moveon.org and the GE media stations of MSNBC/NBC/CNBC ads while Republicans have depended on individuals.
Republicans are tired of the double standard.
