Why is my cat pooping everywhere?

Because she is.

OK. I have a cat who is perpetually pooping outside the litter box. I have tried EVERYTHING to get her to stop. First, I took her to the vet to make sure nothing was wrong. Actually, I've done that several times as it's been years. I make sure the litter is clean, I put a second litter box in my apartment (even though it's only 700 sq. ft.), I've changed the brand of litter a few times AND I mix wet food into her dry food. I'll be honest, after 12 years, it's gotten old. Does anyone have any other ideas? OR, does anyone want a cat who poops all over? Because at this point, she can be yours for the low, low price of free.

Update:

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH FOR YOUR AWESOME RESPONSES!!!

Make sure you completely get rid of the smell of where she has gone since this now may be habit.

You can put her in a bathroom with food water and the litterbox, a few days running, to get her back into the idea.

The boxes may be inn the wrong places - try put them where she has had her oopses.

It's possible the litter boxes are too small for her liking or maybe they aren't where she feels she has enough privacy. She may also need some conditioning to get her to poo in the litter box again. I've never had that problem so i have no idea how to re-condition a cat who is stuck in her ways, however I'm sure your vet would have some ideas or maybe even a local cat rescue since they have cats with behavioral and or learned traits that us humans don't find to be a quality we would like.

Also, for more tips you can subscribe to a cat newsletter via email. They have really good tips and are actually where I got some of the above information. And no, I'm not advertising for them, I just stumbled across the site one day and since than quite a few of the newsletters have had some very, very useful tips that worked for me.

*I got this webpages link via an email so if it doesn't work let me know and I'll try to fix it if you'd like.

Did you borrow my cat when I wasn't looking?

My 12 year old neutered Siamese mix was doing the same thing. Almost never a pee. LOTS of poops- was pooping on my living room rug when I finally drew the line.

The vet drew blood and tested his thyroid levels- common issue in older cats. Since he was normal, the vet put him on 10 mg of Amitryptaline 2x day. For the first couple of days I confined him in a small room so I could catch him easier to give him the pill. Once the med took effect, he became so mellow that catching him is no longer an issue.

I also changed back to a plain clay litter and gave him his own litter box (2 other cats in house) that is large, wide, shallow, and uncovered. Some cats apparently get phobic about covered boxes and scented litter- go figure.

The combo of everything worked wonders. In one month, he's had one accident and that was in the beginning.

I was very reluctant to medicate my cat, but apparently these psychotic issues are common. Do the medical tests first, then try the "little blue pill." It will save your sanity. (and possibly your cat's life)

    Good luck.

some cats just plain don't like the litter, change brands or type of it.

If the little box is the kind that has a cover on top, try removing it and lets see if she stops.

That is a very low price, indeed, but I travel too much to keep pets.

You simply have a malfunctioning cat unit. Strenuous training is required to rectify this sad situation.
