Glassblowing classes on the East Coast?

I live in Atlantic Canada and would like to take a course/class in glassblowing. I haven't been able to find anyone who offers these in the Atlantic Region, so any info folks can provide would be appreciated.

Also, I posted another question about teaching youself glassblowing in the "Other visual arts" section - I'd appreciate any additional info people can provide for that question as well. It can be found here:

It is much easier to find torch glass working classes than it is to find furnace glass blowing places. You mention Schmid in your other question, which is firmly furnace glass blowing. My set of pages http://www.mikegigi.com/sitemap.htm has many pages of information on lower cost tools and building equipment including the full text of my Hot Glass Bits newsletter that was published while I was developing and the additional material added after it went on the internet.

I took classes at the beginning and I have visited lots of glass studios and I would recommend taking at least one good class to start with so you see what good equipment and tools are supposed to be like before you try to cope with your substitutes.

I would also suggest signing on to the Craft Web Glass forum and lurking while some people with decades of glass experience talk about problems. Also look up there any archived threads from Franklin Sankar who has worked out a lot of problems by asking questions that are both naive and incredibly ambitious while living in Trinidad almost off the shores of Venezuela. A couple of pictures on my site include him.

I mentioned Steinert Industries in my answer to your other question, as a source for lampworking supplies (they also make excellent full size blowpipes and other tools). They list a number of glass schools on their site, including two on Prince Edward Island. I don't know how convenient that is to you, but you can check out their list of schools (see link below).

Good luck finding a program! If you can do so, I think you will have a better learning experience.

Go to your local phone book and look for kiln stores or clay sales. Those kinds of stores often know where you can learn glass blowing. If you can't find it locally, go to your local fairs. They often have glass blowers that you can connect to for lessons. Good luck.

Source(s): I'm a life long artist and have investigate glass blowing myself.
