What happened to the nicotine substitute cigarettes that we were able to buy back in the 70's?
They were available anywhere you could buy cigarettes & cost the same & were packaged the same, I worked in a small tobacconists at the time & decided to try them, they were fine & think I would have happily continued to smoke them . I cant recall what they were called ? I have since given up but watching a mate struggle to do so has made me wonder why they are no longer available ? Surely it would be worth reintroducing them again !

IIRC, the brand name was "Free", and they were made out of lettuce. Googling for "Free cigarettes" was hopeless, since it got lots of links for free cigarette coupons, etc.
But when I googled for "Lettuce cigarettes", sure enough I found another brand that's apparently still in production: http://www.bravosmokes.com/ . It looks like there were some other brands as well, although I didn't see the "Free" brand.
Interestingly, I first heard about the lettuce cigarettes on an episode of the "To Tell The Truth" game show, in which the inventor appeared. I remember Gary Moore passing out samples of the cigarettes to the panelists, and telling them, "try one of these, even if you don't smoke". At the end of the show, the inventor ate one of the cigarettes, because they were just lettuce.

They've been replaced by nicotine patches that enable a controlled amount of the nasty chemical enter the body. You can then diminish the strength of the patch to move towards abstention, but as with most things like that, the most important thing is willpower.
Good luck.
