One Guinea Pig vs two?

Should we get one guinea pig or two? We'd like to get one but I've read that they are very social and should not be singled out? Anyone have guinea pig experience? Also, should we give it a bath when cleaning the cage?

Guinea Pigs will be happier, healthier, and live longer if they are kept with a cagemate or more. Males with males, and females with females, to avoid any pregnancies. Or you can neuter one male and keep him with many females, but never more than one male with a group of females. It's also better to get them at the same time. A MUST READ: http://www.cavyspirit.com/sociallife.htm

You can give it a bath only every few months, it is not necessary to do often they clean them selves. So no do not bathe them when you clean the cage.

Diet: They do not make their own sufficient amounts of Vitamin C so they need you to supply it. They need to have a plain timothy based pellet food. No extra pieces like nuts or seeds. Always must have an unlimited supply of hay in the cage and fresh, clean water daily. Each morning and evening they need 1 cup of mixed veggies each.

Housing: It is highly advised to house them indoors and not outdoors. “Did you know that the US Department of Agriculture states in their regulations governing commercial guinea pig breeders and dealers that it is illegal to house guinea pigs in an outdoor area or building without means of controlling the temperature? They recognize that it is simply not appropriate or healthy for domesticated guinea pigs to live outdoors in the United States. The regulations state that ambient temperature must be maintained between 60°F and 85°F and that adequate ventilation be provided so as to minimize drafts, odors, and moisture condensation. Guinea pigs easily succumb to heat stroke (fatal) at temperatures over 85°F -- even if they are in the shade.” (Right from guinea pig cages.com safety page) The best cages are C&C cages, made of cubes and coroplast. This is a great site for making them, http://www.guineapigcages.com/ You can use extra cubes to make a pen to take them out to eat grass in, only in the warm months though, and in the evening, around sunset.

  • "Guinea pigs are a social, herd animal. They do better in groups. A pair of guinea pigs is a better option than just one. There are a number of issues to weigh on both sides of the one or two cavy question. Bottom line, the decision for just one is usually the result of what is best for you. The decision for two is usually the result of what is best for the guinea pig. We usually go with what is best for the guinea pigs. If you cannot provide the best possible life for the animals, then perhaps you should consider an animal that would be happier living within your constraints."

Guinea pigs should always be kept in pairs or groups(same sex or altered) indoors, in a cage with at least 7.5sq ft(10sq ft for males) on one level and daily floor time/handling, to be happy and healthy.

They should have unlimited access to fresh water(no Vit C drops) and grass hay available at all times, 1/8-1/4 cup of plain guinea pig pellets(no coloured bits, nuts, seeds, or dried veggies) and 1 cup of fresh veggies per pig daily.

    Guinea pigs rarely need baths.

Never get one guinea pig as it will be very lonely and can become depressed. You have to get at least two of the same gender. Guinea pigs do not need baths. They hate to be in water and will get very stressed. They clean themselves.

I would say 2 because no matter how much you cuddle with it you still aren't a guinea pig.

Get females I know that females can fight to but definitly less likely to.

It really depends on the pig some like water some hate it. They can jump really high so first bath I would shut the door so they can't escape!

i could choose for a rat. 2 rats extremely, in case you're making plans on getting a rat get 2 jointly by using fact rats can't stay on my own. Rats are extremely sensible and confirm you be attentive to your analyze earlier you get the two of those. i does not reccomend a guinea pig, i've got heard they are skittish and apprehensive of each thing. stable luck on getting a million (or 2) of those mind-blowing creatures. :)
