Navy Not Allowing PT For DEP Recruits?
I was told by my recruiters today that somebody who wasn't PTing regularly died when he went to boot camp. He did 25 push ups and just died. This apparently led to the Navy not letting DEP Recruits PT anymore. My fellow recruits and I are PTing off of the property across the street because we want to be in good shape for when we get to boot camp but this is a bummer, I loved PT. I was wondering if other sailors could tell me if this is nationwide or just local.
That's what they told us. I was freaking floored by it. It's pathetic really.
@Yak Rider - My dad said the same thing about PTing Depers. I can't imagine not PTing. All of the people who are in the DEP group (myself excluded) have signed contracts and are for all intents and purposes enlisted in the Navy. I'm the youngest DEPer in my group, 17, and go to MEPS to get my medical consult this Tues - Wed. I'm hoping they let us PT again. My recruiter plainly said that a DEPer went to boot camp and his recruiter didn't PT him and when he got there he couldn't hack it. There had to be something wrong other than being out of shape obviously but medical should have picked that up at MEPS. I'm going to the Marine Corps recruiting tomorrow because I'm pretty close to the recruiter there (was originally going to be a Marine) and I'm going to ask him if I can PT with them on the days when the Navy DEPers aren't recruiting on our own.

No, It wasn't boot camp. It was in DEP. A Future Sailor died during PT from heat stroke. The divisions are not allowed to PT for the time being until a proper investigation is completed. Then they will release authorization to once again continue DEP PT.

Not that unusual. We couldn't do PT when I was a hold-under (waiting for a class start) at Basic Training either. They were worried we'd get injured, which would delay our training, which would delay us getting to our first duty station. The Army couldn't afford that, with a war on. So we just laid around on our bunks for two weeks. It didn't hurt us any.
You can do PT on your own or with a group of your fellow recruits. Having the recruiter lead you helps motivate you, of course, but it's not strictly necessary.

My guess is you misunderstood your recruiter. I would imagine that some DEP'er died during PT or during the pre-boot camp PRT.
I always wondered how the Navy could get away with PT'ing DEP'ers. They are civilians and the liability is great.
