Our church members provide gifts for about 300 children per year (and it's not a HUGE church!)

We work with a local humanitarian service (as do many churches in our area). They screen people to make sure they are really in need, then supply us with names and ages of the children. Then we have a ball going shopping for them and trying to get the most out of our set budget. We work with them all year round in many ways, but it's particularly rewarding to help people at Christmastime.

I suggest that you check with some churches in your area to see if they can refer you to any agencies they might work with. But don't waste any time doing it...I'm sure people start getting on their lists as early as possible.

I don't know about "karma," but I love to give simply because I received the greatest gift imaginable in my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. (And I certainly didn't do anything to deserve it)!

I hope everything turns out well for you. My family was in the same situation last year, when my husband's hours were severely cut at his job that he had held for about 17 years. We did what we could for others, but our own children received handmade gifts and some good thrift store finds. It turned out to be our best Christmas ever, because we had very few shopping trips, and we weren't spending money we didn't have. The kids were happy, and we were able to keep our focus where it belonged, so we've decided to continue the tradition!
