are multi vitamins good for you?
i have herd recently that a multi vitamin can be bad for you, because you are adding a lot of vitamins that you already have. is there any truth to that? and if not, then is there anything bad about taking multi vitamin?

Here's what the National Institute for Health has to say about vitamin supplements.
"Research has shown that some uses of dietary supplements are effective in preventing or treating diseases. For example, scientists have found that folic acid (a vitamin) prevents certain birth defects, and a regimen of vitamins and zinc can slow the progression of the age- related eye disease macular degeneration. Also, calcium and vitamin D supplements can be helpful in preventing and treating bone loss and osteoporosis (thinning of bone tissue).
Research has also produced some promising results suggesting that other dietary supplements may be helpful for other health conditions (e.g., omega-3 fatty acidsEssential nutrients that the body cannot make on its own but can obtain from foods such as fish and flaxseed, or from dietary supplements. for coronary disease), but in most cases, additional research is needed before firm conclusions can be drawn."
(Note - the above is just a snippet, not the whole story. So, do your homework before making decisions about what you put in your body.)
I've taken vitamin supplements most of my life (one mutli pill per day) and I'm in excellent health at 59. The way I look at it is vitamin/mineral supplements are cheap insurance. However, don't think because they may be beneficial, more is better. Just take one quality supplement per day. You won't need it if you eat a healthful diet and you'll just excrete what your body doesn't need. But, if you do need one for vitamins or minerals, it'll be there.
Also, that's the ONLY supplement I've ever taken. If you eat right, you won't need any supplements.

It is better to eat right if you can.
Vitamins in food are often synergistically grouped. There are lots of good things that have not been identified as vitamins. Vitamins are compounds that cause disease when they are missing from your diet. There lots of compounds that help you to thrive that do not make you sick when they are missing.
Also there may be food compounds that help you over longer periods. You may avoid blindness in old age or have better general health. You should realize that vitamins are a small set of nutrients.
If you take vitamins, you should take them with food.

Yeah and what if we don't eat fruits and vegetables? Then Multi-vitamins are perfectly suitable for us, not everyone has the money to be buying a wide variety of food.

they're actually terrible for you. you can easily overdose on vitamin b12 (the mineral that makes up most of a standard multivitamin, about 35% of the pill) and have what is called a niacin rush. a niacin rush will make your skin turn very red and permanently damage your skin pigments. it also will increase the potential for you to have heart disease later in life. avoid multivitamins at all costs, just a marketing ploy to get you to spend thousands of dollars on nutrients that you can easily get by just regularly eating fruits and vegetables.
