Can I use regular AA batteries on a solar walkway light instead of rechargeable ones?

I do it all the time. they won't recharge and the light will be a little brighter but that's it. I have four large outdoor globes with lights inside and for some reason the solar panel won't work so I just use good ol' regular batteries. They last about two and a half weeks.

A solar walkway light has so little power in its charger, I doubt the battery would explode. The worst that would happen is it would leak, and that would be messy. The charger won't be hurt, unless the battery leaks onto it.

But I echo the others - the batteries won't recharge, making this kind of pointless. You can get AA rechargable batteries on the internet that are specifically made for solar - high temperature NiCd - or can use ordinary department-store NiMH cells. But the walkway light may not charge a NiMH very well, as that kind of battery needs a more sophisticated kind of charger.

I bought a solar light and took it out of the box and put the battery on "on" and it lit up. My questions: If I turn the battery "off" does this mean it will charge through the solar and then just start shining at dark? Or does the battery need to be set to "on" all the time. If so, as "Baby Girl" mentioned, what's energy saving about this??? How do I set the on/off switch to use solar power?

You'll in effect be trying to recharge non rechargeable batteries, at best you'll burn out the charging system of your solar light, at worst the non rechargeable battery will literally explode with potentially extremely dangerous results.

It works with your regular AA one because the rechargeable one is flat, obtain a new battery.

Remember, these Rechargeable batteries can only be charged so many times, typically 1,000 I think, so if your light is anything like 3 years old it's worn out.
