Question for a housewife or a washer repair guy---front loading washer smells-?

I have a high efficiency front loading Kenmore machine. Uses very little water, is supposed to be the bomb. It smells like stale/ sour water(like an old wash cloth) and now my clothes are starting to smell, too. I have a couple of friends with the same problem. Does anyone have any ideas on this. I do use unscented biodegradable soaps...but I didn't have this problem with my old top loader. Is it a front loader problem? Or am I doing something wrong? Maybe I need a "how to wash clothes" tute!

Update:

Found this link about a clean out trap in the front-http://www.managemylife.com/mmh/questions/143059-w...

Also picked up a few good tips like:

leave the door ajar so it can dry out

use only HE detergent and just a about two teaspoons full

run a really hot bleach bath through it monthly

I have the same darn problem. I have a Whirlpool Duet. I hate it. The clothes smell worse when you sweat. Towels smell like cat pee as soon as you start toweling off.

I found some stuff at Home Depot and now at Walmart called Affresh. Whirlpool makes it. It's 3 tablets for about $8. You run through your washer by itself on the hottest setting about once a month. I sat by a Whirlpool rep on the plane once and was telling her about my issue and that I had used Affresh and didn't think it helped much. She recommended using all three Affresh tablets at once. This worked better. Bonus- she sent me some free ones!

It also helps to wipe around the seal. Also always leave your door open.

I do have to say, though, that after all this my clothes still smell a little. I will never buy another front-loader again.

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.pchealthcleaner.net/

It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.
