When is 'contemporary' ?

I tried looking for the right definition everywhere, but still couldn't find it.

So really, when someone say 'contemporary', is there a specific period for it?

Would the World Wars be considered as something that happens in contemporary period? I mean it is quite recent. Or the contemporary period is limited to the century you are living?

    Depends on how you use the word.

    Some people say 'contemporary' and mean it as in TODAY and right now... such as contemporary literature is Harry potter.

    However if you're writing an essay, you can use the word contemporary in the context of another period. For instance;

    18th century contemporary writing was blah blah blah.

    It means belonging to the same period of time. So, if you are talking about the two World Wars, you mean contemporary to them. If you are discussing things pertaining to yourself, you mean contemporary to you. Your contemporaries are people of your age group.
