Is the debate on the relative morality of Christians and atheists a red herring?
The relative morality of Christians and Atheists is an ongoing battle in the “God debates.” Professional atheists such as Harris and Hitchens engage in such debates regularly, and many similar topics pop up on venues such as this one. Christopher Hitchens in live debates, strives to convince us all, that in fact, atheists are more moral and ethical, than are religious / Christian people. While this may or may not be true, is it not irrelevant concerning the possible existence of a supernatural power? When unable to substantiate faith with facts, religious people sometimes retreat to a position of “Whether God exists or not, being a Christian makes me a more moral person.” In effect they are saying that even if the belief is false, having that belief, by default, invests them with moral superiority. That those people exist who are perceived to be most moral, Martin Luther King, Mother Teresa et al, offers no more evidence for the existence of a deity than do those people who are perceived as the most immoral, Hitler, Stalin, et al, offer evidence that a deity does not exist. I would suggest that the issue of morality only serves to distract from the one true question. "Is the super natural extant”?

I agree. This and many other arguments have nothing to do with the existence of a god.

I wouldn't call it a red herring as much as I would call it a separate argument. A lot of Christians will argue that Christianity brings people to more moral life styles. Atheists will argue with examples like the Crusades and the Wetborro Baptist church, while Christians might argue with Atheists example like Hitler.
The funny thing is how pointless the whole argument is, and how both sides are arguing over mind control. Yes, religion has brought upon many injustices and negative things in society, but it has also brought a lot of good. The Anglo-Saxons were living in fear, but when Christianity was brought to them, they were able to have at least some happiness in their lives.
Atheism doesn't make a person bad. Ideas of moral don't come from the idea of a higher power. Most of the founding fathers weren't even Christian- some of them were Atheists, and some of them were Theists.
You can't control what people think. Like it or not, religion is here to stay. Instead of fighting what someone else thinks, why not try to co-exist with people who don't- God forbid- think the same way you do?

particularly, i'm an atheist and that i think of Jesus sounds like a great guy. somebody i does no longer innovations being acquaintances with (if he weren't all against atheists, I propose). I only have not got faith he became the son of God, by using fact i've got faith there is no God. I additionally agree that each physique faiths have a suitable in this international. noticeably if those faiths sell tolerance and information and love (like maximum do). yet i do no longer think of they have a suitable to pry into my existence and ideology and then attempt their toughest to alter me. for my area, i do no longer think i'd desire to be prayed for, as i actually am an particularly pleased individual; i actual want the thought that existence isn't a attempt...and that i've got not any choose nor want for "eternal existence". I additionally do no longer purely like the belief of this variety of great form of sturdy human beings probably going to hell for some thing trivial. I do savor the sentiment, besides the fact that.

I agree, as an atheist I believe morality pre-dates religion, but the existence of the supernatural is rather dead in the water as a topic until someone provides some concrete, testable evidence.

Yes, you could consider it a red herring.
However, considering that theists are making the argument that religion is absolutely necessary for morality, it still relates to the key issue.
Source(s): The debate is only relevant within it's social context. God's existence or not really isn't an issue in isolation; it's ramifications are why it's debated. - Anonymous1 decade ago

Conflicts are never straightforward and they never have a simple "happy ending".
