Cat terrified of fireworks, help?

Hi there, a few fireworks went off outside last night when my cat was in the living room with us. She ran upstairs and hid under our bed and is still very nervous this morning. Obviously, there are going to be a lot more fireworks in the coming weeks so what can I do to help her? We shut the curtains and I know perhaps music would help, but when they are so sporadic it's hard to do this all the time. Any other ideas? She's a wee year and a half old rescue cat and has only just got more confidence after 6 months with us.Thanks.

Update:

Hi Ali, I know cats are going to be scared of fireworks, just seeing if anyone has any ideas to help her feel a bit more secure. Our cat likes water, she plays in puddles, loves being in the rain and likes the bath! so you never know!

We have the same problem with our 5 cats. We use feliway diffuser, its abou £25 fom a vet or pharmacist and you plug it into a socket. It relaxes the cats. It might be best to get one now, does your cat have a little area? I have one cat who is really nervous, she sits on top of our tall unit when she had scare. Cats like high places so we put an igloo bed up there for her, this makes her feel safe. Maybe you could do the same. If you cat does get scared, as much as you want to it's probably not a good idea to run after it, it will probably get freaked out even more,

Some vets can help with a product that I believe is based on human breast milk which contains a natural sedative, I have found it very effective on a very nervous dog. A product called Serene-Um (or similar!) is also worth a try, it comes in drops or tablet form, available from most good pet shops..again it is a natural product. It is a good idea to make sure your cat is shut in the house when it seriously gets to firework time, put a radio on loudly in the room she is in and leave the light ON so the flashes are not so obvious. I would make sure she is kept in every evening when it starts to get dark.

Write to the government asking them to ban the sales of fireworks to the general public! Organised firework parties are great as we all know when they are going to happen and can protect our pets accordingly..they should be on NOV. 5th only in my opinion, hundreds of animals die through fear or abuse due to fireworks, it really saddens me. I hope your cat is ok.xx

Hate to assert this yet i does no longer have left a 6 month previous cat on a night like this night, your cat could have bonded with you by potential of now and had you been there it could have been a ways calmer. I actual have 5 cats and 3 of them have been jumpy this night, so i closed all of the curtains, became the heating as much as 24 stages, have been given out the radio controlled mouse they opt to attack, became the radio on and performed with my little ones all night till the racket stopped, the different 2 have been fantastic, one plenty so as that he became sat on the shed roof gazing the fireworks - hes a wierd cat! the terrific component to do to your cat on bonfire night is be no extra advantageous than 10 ft from it, certainly one of them is curled up on suitable of my router suitable now (by using fact its heat) and he's happy as may well be.
