What is a good monitor for programming?

I am looking for another monitor. I currently have my 42" LCD TV connected to my PC and it has worked great so far, but I am starting to notice difficulty in reading text. I want to connect another monitor to place closer to me for primarily programming, reading, etc. I will obviously be using my TV for any activities that require high refresh rate, resolution, and color. With that in mind, I'm wondering whether or not I should spend more on a high quality monitor when I will only be using it for text related activities. I would like to know of any recommendations for a secondary monitor.

For programming, get something that can swivel to vertical orientation.

Yes get a smaller LCD designed for a computer say a Samsung 22 inch and make sure it has DVI cable to connect it up with the pc. Make sure you use the monitors optimum resolution 1680x1050 for most 22 inchers. It will be as sharp as a razor.
