If NASCAR were to give the Chase an elimination format in 2011, wouldn't it be a good idea to...?

give byes to both the points leader and the winner of the most races at the end of the regular season? By "bye" I mean that, should the driver with a bye finish the lowest of the Chasers in one of the first six to nine events of the Chase, he wouldn't be eliminated, but use up his "bye" on that race? That way, doing very well in the regular season would mean something (this idea also assumes that points wouldn't be used in the Elimination format). Also, this is what it would have meant for 2010 had this elimination format been in place: After Richmond, Denny Hamlin was the winner of the most races (6) and Kevin Harvick was the points leader. They would have been given their respective byes. Meanwhile, Jimmie Johnson, who neither led the points nor won the most races, would have been the first driver eliminated after NH because he finished the lowest of the field.

Update:

Under my idea of the Elimination system, this is who would still be running for the title in 2010:

Kevin Harvick

Denny Hamlin

Jeff Gordon

Tony Stewart

Carl Edwards

Matt Kenseth

Jeff Burton

Eliminated because of low finishes

Jimmie Johnson-NH-25th

Clint Bowyer-Dover-27th

Kyle Busch-Kansas-21st

Greg Biffle-Auto Club-41st

Kurt Busch-Charlotte-31st

Update 2:

To the first three who answered: if you don't like the Chase, then don't answer my question. Answers that complain about the Chase or call it a terrible idea are not helpful answers to the question I asked.

Keep the Chase, but get rid of that stupid bonus points thing for wins. Yeah I understand NASCAR wants to emphasize wins, but this is a sport where you don't need to win much to be successful. That's what makes it unique. But with idiots like Brian France trying to turn the Chase into the World Series or Superbowl that's not gonna happen.

But I think your idea is good. It'll be good for the more consistent guys like Jeff Gordon and Kevin Harvick and not so good to inconsistent guys like Jimmie Johnson and Kyle Busch.

I am not and never have been a fan of the chase format. Which makes most of the season a boring one. I am and always will be in favor of NASCAR adopting the F-1 point system which promotes and rewards drivers and teams for running all out and up front throughout the race. Which is how it should be. It shouldn't be lets run good enough and far enough up front to maintain or get into a good spot in the chase. It should be an all out run from start to finish with only the top ten positions paying any points at all. The rest would have to step up or just watch. A bye might work but that would also give someone an out say to run just so so. What about kicking out the highest point scored and the lowest of each? JMO?

I don't really think it's a good idea. NASCAR is about being consistent and even if you have a bad week, you still have to drive your way back to the front. Plus sometimes it's just a mechanical failure or something like that. You got to give them more of a chance then one race to take them out of championship contention. In my opinion the Chase is fine the way it is. This year it looks like we're gonna have a close finish between jimmie, denny, and harvick. Also doing it with the byes makes it to much like the NFL. NASCAR is trying to make a playoffs, but not completely like the NFL.

    An interesting idea, but,,,,,

What do you do if there are drivers tied for most wins?

I don't see the problem with the CHASE format, strange as it may seem.

Other types of "sports" all have playoffs before they have their champion team/player. (Including wild cards that have won the whole shooting match)

And to those who will pipe in...Jeff would have had 99 championships by now if it were not for the CHASE.....guess what??? WHO CARES???? With the pressures being different, drivers might have reacted different. WHO really knows how those seasons would have ended without the CHASE???

I think the elimination method might work better in maybe Nationwide or Truck series where they don't have the chase system in place yet.

Source(s): But I digest...... Just my 2 cents.

I hate every single facet of the elimination idea. It's a worse idea than what we currently have. What was so wrong with giving the championship to the driver who earned the most points over the entire season?! I don't wanna see the most exciting possible finish. I wanna see the most deserving driver win. I mean seriously, how stupid would it be to eliminate Jimmie Johnson after one bad race? In this elimination format, we'd have drivers tip toeing around the track just trying to avoid a crash. You actually think it's a good idea that Kenseth is still alive but not Jimmie Johnson?

Hate the Chase format! Give it to the driver with the most points over the season the trophy. Also remember that the money handed out at the end of year is disbursed according to the current points system. Those that are in 10th, 11th, 12th may not be in those positions if they were using the old points system.

Screw a chase elimination format (no offence)

I just want points position to count going into the chase....there should be a bonus for being in 1-12 in points...starting at 0 for 12th and going up to lets say 80 for 1st.

If you want to have an eliminator, have it after a few races. One crash shouldn't ruin an entire season for a team.

Man this isn't the answer you probably want to hear, but if the chase was a good idea then everybody wouldn't be trying to fix it ever since Brian France started it. In other words, no matter what kind of numbers you crunch, the chase is a bad idea.
