Where did the response "okay" originate?
A common affirmitive response is the word "okay". Where did it come from? Is it short for something or is a term borrowed from another language besides english?

Nope, purely American. *^_^* In fact... I don't know if other countries use this word or not... there are certainly other words that would work in its stead...

Okay is a colloquial English word denoting approval, assent, or acknowledgment. "Okay" has frequently turned up as a loanword in many other languages. The origins of "okay" are not known with certainty, and have been the subject of much discussion over the years.

I always heard it started with the presidential campaign of Van Buren, who was called Old Kinderhook, or OK for short.
