Ok- people seem to be getting confused by the terminology here.

Tzitzit are the strings that go onto the corner of a garment. There are TWO garments that have tzitzit on them

    1) Talit i.e. the prayer shawl- nobody needs more than one of these

    2) Talit Katan also known as TZITZIT even though tzitzit refers to the strings and not to the garments.

When it comes to what people need-

as stated above, no one needs more than one talit.

With tzitzit it is a bit more difficult to assess as the fewer garements one has, the faster they wear out. Since these are worn daily, they wear out very quickly with the strings fraying and knots loosening. However, if one learns how to tie tzitzit, you can save a lot of money by retying the strings yourself. Practically- I find three pairs the minimum for the following reason.

    1- you are wearing

    2- in the wash

3- in case of an accident and you need a clean pair when the other two are being washed

A piece of advice on washing tzitzit- if you just chuck them into the washing machine, the strings will fray VERY quickly, they will also get tangled and break. To lengthen the life ot the tzitzit without having to handwash them- find a wool sock- and put them into the sock when in the wash so they get cleaned, but the strings do not get damaged

My understanding is, you're talking about the Tzitzit garment, not the strings.

    2 are enough.

But make sure about the size of the garment (not the strings) should be no less then 123 centimeters wide by 163 cm long & preferably 100% cotton.

Good luck & thank you for helping our brother !

He needs 4 -- one for each corner of the tallit (prayer shawl)

Just buy him one or two of these but be sure to ask him for his size. That is very nice of you.
