muslim symbol of crescent moon + star?
http://www.answers.com/topic/crescent-1
Does the star have a name or is it based on a specific star? Because a few months ago I saw a crescent moon with a bright star (Venus???) next to it just like in the symbol

The star and crescent symbol has been around for longer than Islam. There are coins from Byzantion (modern Istanbul) in the 1st Century BC with the star and crescent symbol on them, and it seems likely that the Turks adopted the symbol from there, although nobody seems too sure.
There are a few bright stars along the path of the moon, and the planets also follow the same path, so there is no way of telling which particular star or planet was intended by the symbol.
