Do all large breed dogs have a short lifespan?

I'd absolutely get a dog from a shelter over a breeder any day, but I was just wondering. I love huge dogs, but I know most of them don't live very long. Are they more likely to have a longer lifespan if they are a mixed breed compared to a purebred?

Update:

Well I think a dog that only lives for about 7 years isn't a very long lifespan.

One of my dogs is a huge mixed breed going on 13. I don't think it's because he is mixed I believe it is because he has good food and lots of love and exercise. He is still having a daily one hour long walk and loves it.

Larger breeds have shorter life spans yes. And no, a mix wouldn't have a longer lifespan compared to a purebred. But it all depends if you're buying a purebred from a responsible breeder or a backyard breeder.

Mix breeds are generally bred by backyard breeders who have no clue what their doing and no intention of bettering the standard. A lot of these puppies grow older and have illnesses and diseases that could've been prevented had the breeder been properly educated on what breeding actually is.

A purebred, (when bred through a reputable breeder) is created to better the standard of a certain breed and therefore works harder to find compatible dams and sires to breed out any flaws. Thus bringing into this world stronger, healthier dogs.

Nope, mix vs. pure does not matter. Overall health matters.

Generally the bigger the dog, the shorter the lifespan. But there are of course exceptions to every rule.

    Add:

Who said 7 years?? That's pretty short even for the largest dogs.

Bottom line, most people who love large dogs would rather spend 7-10 years with a large dog (or two) than 17-20 years with a small dog. It's your choice tho.

What do you mean that they don't live very long? What do you expect.. dogs to live until they are 25?

I've got two dogs, 60+ pounds each, and they are still kickin'. Both are 6 years old, give or take. It is true, that smaller dogs do live longer. When working at a pet store years ago, I met a little yip yap dog that was older then I was! This dog was 19 years old!!!

The average life expectancy of a dog can range from 10 - 14 years.

My friend had a Golden Retriever that lived for 13 (or maybe 14) long happy years! So they have long-ish life spans. 7 years is short to me, but thats because i had a poodle that lived for 18 years. lol. I'm not sure about the purebreed, mixed breed thing though.

  • yes, the larger the dog the shorter its life span generally

but no, mutts are not healthier than pure breds, they actually have a higher chance of getting genetic diseases due to there being more breeds in the mix

yes, large dog breeds have a shorter life span than smaller dogs, but they DO NOT "have a short life" maybe like up to 14 years, which is long for a dog.

Yes all larger dogs have shorter life spans. NO it is NOT true that mixed breeds live longer as compared to purebred dogs.
