why must sex appeal be expected from women, even in career?

ok, "presentable", healthy looking, healthy appearance whatever. it's not that you're looking for a job as gym instructor. if heavy people regardless of genders get paid less due to less productivity; assuming more weight, less movement therefore less outcome - makes sense. but a study (i question how far the truth is too) told that a woman gets less from another woman on the same outcome they produced, for she is overweight. this seems obvious on women rather than men. a man can be fat and ugly, even old, and make more than better looking men for his own working performance, but not really a woman. what the heck? the question is not "why slimmer gals get more" but "why is this only on female?" sex appeal, hiding beneath the nice name "presentable" or "healthy looking" in measuring a woman's worth, even in her pay for career what makes it disturbing. come on, it's not just about slim or thin or "presentable", it's obviously sex appeal when a desirable size is outlined as a main determinant -especially if it's for women only. "to fit the uniform", as if you can never make it in different size? why is that whatever a woman does, sex appeal still the one that does it more? even in a formal thing? my source: 'heavy women earn less', http://shine.yahoo.com/channel/life/3-strikes-agai...

Update:

Bill: presentable, yea. but i'm talking about a type of "presentable" with points and reference.

Yawn, men are also expected to look presentable.

Maybe if you'd stop viewing yourself as a victim you'd move ahead in life.

It just goes to show that some things never change! Even though we like to think that we live in a more enlightened world today, many expectations linger and probably always will. In the last few years I've noticed that plunging necklines, tight skirts, tight jackets, and no stockings are becoming quite the norm in lots of offices. If anything, the societal expectation for women to be thin and beautiful has increased- and it's justified by "concern for women's health". Yeah, right..

Men need sex appeal to succeed, every bit as much as women do. But the qualities up for comparison are different by sex. Men are expected to be large and loud, have all their hair, have masculine faces, and not wear glasses.

People with sex appeal are more likely to succeed because, unfortunately, other employees, customers, and owners cannot completely separate the appeal from an assessment of performance and ability.

I read that and thought it was shocking that a plus sized women earns on $5,000 less a year than a thin woman. Factor in the wage gap and that's frightening. It is appalling how we must be sexy to put food on the table much less get ahead in the world.

Whatever work related prejudices exist for women also exist for men you know...Do you really think the tall, strong, good looking man has no advantage over the smaller wimpy, balding over weight guy in hiring and choosing for management positions? ....get real..but yes I agree that our society seems to be more and more "visually oriented" with each passing decade.

Because the 'sexual revolution' (i.e. the social trend of younger women sleeping around) has unwittingly led to women being regarded as an object and general sexual currency for younger men. It's amazing how few women don't seem to register that sleeping with men they've just recently met will lead those men to not respect them at all other than to their face.

If you don't respect your own body, you can't expect other people to.
