Can you help me buy a good new Desktop Computer?
OK, so my Gateway laptop from 2006 finally gave out and I'm ready to buy a new computer and have decided I want a desktop.
My family has never had an issue with gateway so I wouldn't mind going with them again, although if you can give me any data onto why another brand is better/more reliable, let me know.
I would like to spend somewhere between $500 and $800 for whole package, maybe up to $1000
I want Intel for a Processor, the one that tops out a 3.46 GHz is probably good enough (not sure of the name, just remember seeing that many GHz alot)
I want at least 6GB of Memory, but 8GB wouldn;t be bad either
I want at least 1TB of Hard drive
Graphics don;t matter with me as far as games, I really just use a computer for internet, downloading, Music (ALOT) and Watching Videos, a little picture editing, and usually run multiple programs at one time. I do not play PC Games (just Xbox)
I have many USB devices I use, and definitely I am excited to get Windows, since I use it at work and like it, and have been using XP at home till now.
Give me some ideas, I plan to go to Best Buy, and want to be armed with info.
@ pop - I want brand new. I am skeptical about getting anything refurbished.
@ airdogs - I want higher specs because I want the computer to still be ahead of it's time 3/4 years down the road, which is why my laptop was way behind now, it had like 1GHz processor and 1/2 GB of memory, and I needed to run/upgrade programs to current like Norotn 2011 for example and when upgrading that, it crashed the computer. Now it won't bootup, even after System recovering the OS. Yes, but edit movies, play music, surf the net, and download videos/music all at the same time more often than you'd thinlk, I'm a multitasking computer user extreme.
Thanks guys I ended up buying a Gateway 4840 Desktop, with an Intel i3 3.07 GHz Processor, 8GB RAM, and 1TB Hard Drive and it was only just under $600!, I'm set for years to come, and now I have Windows 7.

First of all DO NOT BUY DFROM BEST BUY! That said, have you tried looking at refurbished comoters from Gateway, HP and Dell amoung others?
I bought a nice refurb from Dell at http://www.dell.com/content/segmenter.aspx?c=us&l=...
They have 20% off now if you use code Z?6517S913?Z2G uhntil tomorrow. But these coupon codes come up again often. Check here for coupons from Dell if you are interested: http://twitter.com/delloutlet

The computer you want is something NASA would use?
And all you are going to do with it is Internet and E-mail!
First off nobody in the world needs 6gb of RAM, let alone 8gb of RAM! What you have explained is maybe 2gb of RAM. Unless You open every program on your computer and never close any of them, then maybe you need 6gb.
Unless you are using Photo Shop AND Editing a Movie at the same time then you might need 6gb.
You want the max processor speed because? I guess you can? Are you really going to notice the difference between a 3.4ghz and a 2.8 ghz?
Does Best Buy Sell Gateways?
Honestly a Laptop should last more then 4 years. I'm not sure what happen to your last Gateway computer. But I would think again about buying Gateway (which is owned by Acer)
Have you considered something like this
http://www.gateway.com/programs/zxseries/index.php...
Or
http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/series_...
Don't get AMD Athlon. Its a cheaper processor. Its made people to think they are getting a good deal!
If you can get either i5 or i7. (intel)

in case you replace your computing device's RAM with larger skill chips, it is not important what number slots you have, till you're kicking around 1GB on one chip, then it would not get lots greater useful than that. stressfulpersistent area... you may get an exterior stressfulpersistent that plugs into USB, and a potential jack, and it may function in basic terms like a classic stressfulpersistent on your computing device. Or, an excellent computing device tech at BestBuy or Circuit city can improve your stressfulpersistent via copying all your present day stuff onto a sparkling larger one. And it somewhat isn't any longer costly in any respect. ($40-60 for an computerized circulate.) as quickly as you have the bigger one, you may shop the smaller one for backup or in case you get a sparkling equipment with greater slots.

i agree with pops and airdogs.
I am working with multitrack Video edit and music edit software, so my xp computer probably has to work much more than yours ever will have to- and i am perfect comfortable with 1.5 GHZ dual core and 2 GB RAM.
Its really ridiculuous how people trap in the claims of computer industry who are tellingthem that they need this and this specs in orer to generate better bussines...
