Do global warming deniers really think we should keep science out of politics?
Scientific American ran a piece about Judith Curry, asking whether she's a peacemaker or dupe to be taking 'skeptics' as seriously as she does.
Along with the piece, SciAm ran a very ill-advised online poll. Among the poll questions was "Which policy options do you support?" pertaining to climate change. As tends to happen, global warming deniers flooded to the poll. The option "keeping science out of the political process" currently has a whopping 66% of the vote. 77% also said they would be willing to pay nothing to forestall the risk of catastrophic climate change.

Do global warming deniers really think we should keep science out of politics? Do you agree?
david - no question whatsoever that numerous 'skeptic' blogs sent their readers to vote in the poll. I really don't think that 66% of Scientific American readers are anti-science.

Those that are part of the Rush-Hannity-Palin conservative political agenda do. The last thing they want is an informed voting public, and that means they must control and restrict access to information and knowledge. Their success depends on a stupid and intellectually disinterested populace. That is the reason they invest so much time, money, and effort into promoting ignorance and in discrediting the product and process of empirically-based knowledge and reasoned thought.

I'm not sure it is possible to be more scientifically illiterate and still know how to read and write.

The fault is on all sides of the debate. To a lesser extent, global warming advocates have also limited the introduction of science into politics as exemplified by my question here: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AiD5P...
Good, non-patronizing, education is the only hope. Purveyors of fear, and those who simplify too much do us no favors.
But it is pretty funny that the SA poll was so lopsided: Far more to the skeptic side than America is generally. Must of shown up on one of those blog spots that the skeptics congregate around like moths around a light bulb.

We don't need to get science out of politics IMO. We need to get politics out of science. Science has its place but its place shouldn't be exaggerated. Obviously science tells us that there is a very large earthquake that is overdue on the San Andreas Fault east of LA. Ignoring that would cost us many more lives and property damage. There are plenty of other similar examples. I should point out the obvious, that I don't think the risk of AGW rises to nearly that level at this time.

Only one-sided science that ignores the climate as a whole and has for the past 100 years been focused only on minor greenhouse gases especially CO2.
Also, how come people like you want Americans to bankrupt themselves and while giving China and India a free pass? How come AGW supporters can't acknowledge the strides that businesses have been making to help the environment?

Well when a epdemic happens. The world has to bine together they well be thinking diffrently. Science is a big part of the world. We need the Earth it the only planet we know of that can support life. Global warming is real. I think some rich people do not care. Worse come to worse and the prices of food sky rocket. Or new diseases come out. Their always going to b the ones in line for top medical care and food.
Or if a ice burg breaks off and makes a tidal wave. The rich can just get on their private planes fly away/. I think Giaia real the world like a dog if it gets to maany flees it is going to shake them off.

"I really don't think that 66% of Scientific American readers are anti-science."
Are they anti-science or do they think that man is not the cause of 'climate change?' You are making assumptions that are not there..and you would also be misleading if you stated that ALL scientists support 'man made climate change,' because you and I both know that is not the case.
That is the thing about science...it is all based on theories, until it has been proved 100%. Man made climate change is still a theory, and based on the fact that this still is a theory, yes politics and science should be separate.
As to your original question, calling people names just because they may have questions as to a certain scientific claim, will not win you points and makes people defensive...just an observation.
I don't seeing anyone deny that global climate change is not happening. They just deny that it is being caused by man.

Rather than trying to keep science out of politics, deniers should advocate subjecting politicians to an IQ test and then disqualify anyone that scores 85 or higher.

We should keep politics out of science
Dana you could start but discontinuing your political rants and stick to science questions and answers only. There is a forum on YA! and you could move your political questions to the politics board.

What?!?!?
I'm shocked by this, especially a poll run by SciAm. I couldn't figure out if this was a poll only attended by people on the site or if it was actively distributed.
I think we need to keep politics out of science.

You know the old saying that one bad apple spoils the bunch. Well adding politics to science (with GW) has spoiled the reputation of science. So yes we should keep politics out of science. We should keep science out of politics because politics has no idea what it's talking about.
